Hi All.

I stay in Wierdapark, and want to do some MTB in the mornings during the week, but the traffic is hectic !

Are there any "safe" back roads/gravel roads to take in the area ?

For longer trips, are there any back roads one can take leading to Harties maybe ?    I was thinking of the gravel road leading past Mangwanani Spa but then I noticed it runs nicely past Atteridgeville . . . .

Surely there must be something in the area I don't know about

If you stick to the gravel next to the road you can go all the way to Harties . Saartjie nek it gets a bit tight in places if you wanna stay of the tar . Depends how big a loop you wanna do in the morning . Go past the Spur towards Mall , turn left and follow dirt track all the way up to Theuns v Niekerk . Jump at robot , up tp next intersection , again you can cross at traffic light . At next intersection (old JHB ) road turn left before tar road and follow all the way up to Ruimte crossing roads at Traffic lights . Up ruimte on left hand side where you will find the nice short climb , cross over to right at traffic light and cross the road to pick up nice single track past security fence . Something like that but you have to time your crossings .

I would suggest driving to Big Red Barn, which is about 17km's (15min drive) from Wierdapark, and ride the trails there. Don't have to worry about traffic, and they are open from 6am.

I can't see why not? BRB isn't that far.

As I said, I would suggest that. I would prefer driving there and riding the trails and not worry about traffic rather than stopping at each crossing because you might be run over ( IMO )

Ride to Big red Barn Ride at Big Red Barn And Ride Back just like you said its not far. There is no satisfaction like leaving the car completely riding to the trails , riding the trails and returning i actually found it easier didnt have to kit up at the trails was ready to ride when i arrived  dont climb into the car dirty after ride many bonuses

Don't you consider riding to the red barn a bit dangerous based on the nearing towns.

If you ride from Wierdapark's side going past Irene or Midstream I don't think security will be an issue

Makes sense from that direction. Riding from Midrand would be vulnerable.

Absolutely agree, was just thinking about the OP

If you want to add a few " easy" kms on tar, include that new midstream road, coming from Eco park going to red barn and circling that, is about 37km.
