One question though, I have the xt long cage clutch derailer, but I found that if the clutch is on, changing is very hard, when off it is much smoother. So can I leave the clutch off and will the new cassette rings and the front ring work in and will changing then be smoother with clutch on?

With the clutch off you will drop your chain...whether it be only occasionally or not depends on terrain/etc.

Leave it on and adjust the tension, Perhaps it is set too tight. Or just get a stronger thumb :P

Your clutch may be setup too stiffly, you can adjust it and see.

But I'd also recommend replacing the shift cable and housing - the clutch RD's really don't like a dirty housing and worn cable and it feels super stiff.

ive gone to a clutch RD in january and it shifts easy for a week after that it gets moer hard, everytime i take it to LBS they say its a dirty housing and replaces it, it works fine for 1 or 2 rides then back to working my thumb harder than my legs.

Is it a full length housing from the shifter to the RD?

If not I would get someone to drill out the guides and fit a full length outer to the RD, will solve the problem permanently (until the nylon inner sleeve wears through on the bends).
