Can't imagine that front chainrings experience much wear and tear, even on a MTB - and they are simple, hard-wearing components.

The front derailler on my road bike is many years old and still going strong. But it is campy....

It is actaully very, very easy to get a Deore or LX FD to behave like a twin blade derailure . But a FD is actaully a very simple part and like BB noticed , even the bottom of the range ones works perfectly . If a roadie derailure gonna fit on your bike then it will work . But y ?

I had a UK MTB magazine (can't remember which one and unfortunately have thrown it away) where a staff member set up a Giant hardtail with Campag road mech. Double chain ring and 10 speed cassette. He used the shifters from one of their touring groupsets. Had been running it for a year with zero problems. Nice one for a Campag fan to try out.

What crankset are you using, where are you getting a 29 tooth ring from. I ask because if you are using a hollowtech 2 crankset you will also have to take a spacer out, drvie side,  so that the 2nd ring sits closer to the frame, this will stop the chain from dropping as often. I also run an XTR crankset and would like to know where u are getting 29 tooth rings from?
