A friend of mine who is a sports physio put it together for me. Its relatively simple:

Pressure bandage

some elastoplast (small thin roll)

rubber glove (I'm not working with blood without a glove on)

small tube of anti septic ointment (bactroban or similar)

Rehidrat

folded space blanket (small)

Anti histamine

a few panados

spare contact lens (since last years W2W where I lost a lens)

the arm band on the handle unwinds into a thin rope, for what its worth

I'm sure that you can find something similar at any outdoor shop. I've seen similar kits at Cape Union Mart, Outdoor Warehouse and Due South.

Add a salbutamol inhaler (ventese/ventolin) to that - useful from time to time (asthma and serious allergic reactions)

And replace your gloves every 6 months - they get fragile and break pretty easily unless they are top quality surgical gloves - and even then they don't last very much longer.

Pressure bandages are small and lightweight and should be part of every ride.

Only a few grams and worth weight in gold when you need them !

This has been one of the more thought provoking threads in a while.

I'll be refurbing my 1st aid kit this weekend AND remember to pack it each time I ride.

As long as you bring the cigar box...

Do you HAVE to use the box they give you at the start or can you use a W2W bag or Epic bag? On their website it says you have to use the box provided! Thanks.

On the first aid topic, take one. I was in a situation in the mountains where we really needed one and did not have. I now always carry a bank bag with space blanket, wound dressing and plasters. Last year Sani a lady came off on the decent into the Umkomaas Valley and it took the rescue team over 2 hours to reach her on foot (no vehicle or helicopter access). A space blanket can save your life, don't underestimate going into shock).

on the box topic. they will provide you with a black box which is also the only thing they will transport between overnight stations. the boxes are loaded and unloaded onto trucks. anything you cant put in the box (bike bag, clothes bags etc) will be loaded onto another truck and taken from the start straight to the finish.

From a news letter June last year:

1.     Reduce clothing. One quality item. (Please note many people thought that clothing in years gone by was sponsored, it was not. In 2015 we focused spending on your riding and race village experience). For 2016 we investigating the option of replacing the black boxes with wheelie bags which will be a gift to you together with one quality item of clothing.

if you're around other people then no gps required. If you're like me and you're at the back on your own then maybe.

if you're going to fall on you pip going through the umkomaas then a space blanket may be handy like the lady i saw lying under one last year. But if you're around other riders then they might have one.  :whistling:
