I went through the same exercise recently and ended up buying an XS 26er.

Glad I went that route.

was thinking of that but am worried he might be a bit small. He is only (a tall) 8 years old. Well almost 8.

I have just been through the excersize.

I have twin 8 year old boys.

They were on 20" Titan Hades and I was pretty happy with the abuse the bikes took.

Looked around and tried the XS 26" thing, but the bike was just too big.

My kids ride the spur series and the odd 10km mtb event and I didn't want a bike they couldn't manage.

So I ended up getting them the Titan Hades 24" (V brake spec) bike. Got them for R3500.00 each which I felt was reasonable for the kind of bike.

Titan also do what they call a 24 9er. http://www.titanracingbikes.com/hades_249r.html

basically a 24" frame with 26" wheels. Also something you could look into.

I know bikes are pricey, but I'm a firm believer in riding the right size bike.

Hope these will last at least 2 years. :)

Children need to be confident on the bike or else they won't enjoy it and can end up hurting themselves.

There's just no way that either of my 2 that are 8 and 10 can ride a xs mtb.

When they outgrow the 24" I'll look at getting a 26" with better parts.

My two cent's worth - look at this growth chart for the past year and then let him test ride bikes for a fit perspective based on your opinion.

Bought the twins new bikes in January for their 9th birthday and my dilemma was 24", 26" or 27,5".   They grew 6cm's in a year!!!!!!!! I could see that they would outgrow 24 quickly so it was down to 26 or 27,5. Took the risk and decided 27,5 (Axis XS) as they rode mom's 26" small with ease - trimmed the bars down to give them better control and position on the bikes.

It took them a day or three to get used to the size increase but now the boys love it as they are riding terrain that they didn't do before due to the triple in front and more confidence tackling bigger obstacles.

Can they stand over the top tube without falling in traffic?

What length cranks are on them?

yes they can when off the saddle - when clipped in they balance the bike to the side with one foot on the ground

cant remember length

My son is turning 8 and is tall for his age.  Tried him on a few 24" bikes at Sportsmans and its a good fit with room to grow.

I can understand considering a 26" for kids that are 9+, but don't think its the way to go for younger unless they are really tall.  I've seen so many kids struggling on the bigger bikes.  The saddle is put right to the bottom and then the handle bars are way higher than the saddle.

what do those go for?

Bit more than the others @ R5299.

But then he really enjoys his cycling and its cheaper than him doing Karate or one of the other paid sports for 2 years.  (at least that's how I justify it).

I have also seen the difference between his bike and his friends cheaper bikes (those bought in Sportsmans) and there is a big difference.  When they swop, you can see the improvement of the friends.
