MTB parts on road bike

Hi All

Will a 9sp Ultegra STI work with a 9sp XT derailleur on a 10sp compact crank?

Google has conflicting opinions. Some say yes and others say impossible.......

I plan to use a 9sp 12-36 rear sprocket on a road bike which has a 10 speed compact crank and 9sp STI's.

I need the extra gears!

Has anybody tried this and are there any compatibility issues I need worry about.

Help and advice will be appreciated.

Thanks

Hmm - theory says yes.

Chain shouldn't be an issue - pitch is the same (marginal) between 9 and 10 speed its width. So you will need to watch your front derailleur - that needs to match your chain width i.e. 9 with 9 etc.

Shifting will likely be clunky but it should work. I ran configs like this on tandems across triple rings in the front - MTD RD (long cage).

Dont use a clutch derailleur BTW - activation is different. Although I think clutch only came in 10 speed.

I have ridden a shimano 9 speed road cassette on a Mtb, and can't see any reason why your proposal should not work.

Should work. I understand Shimano MTB 10 speed shifters and MTB 10 speed derailleurs are not compatible with 9/10 speed road or 9 speed MTB. But 9/10 road and 9 MTB are compatible.

Whenever you use parts that are not 100% matched, they may work OK, but it will never be perfect.

I had a similar issue

I have a 10spd XT setup in my mtb, i wanted the extra speed for some asphalt riding

I ended up buying a second wheel set, with 10spd Ultegra sprocket, works perfect

Sorted thanks. 9sp Xt, dual shifters with 11-36 cluster at the back. Works very well for me. Go anywhere bike, except for 25mm front tyres. Cannot get a 1" wider fork.
