Bike insurance

Just had a claim sorted by Discovery for a crash I had at the Argus this year, cracked the frame and trashed the RD.

Advised accordingly, submitted paperwork they wanted (pics/invoices/replacement costs), then a few weeks later requested more paperwork.  All was emailed to them.

Fought for a month as they kept saying they never received the paperwork by email.  Eventually printed out all paperwork, all emails confirming that the info had previously been sent (three times) and then hand delivered the info (so there were no further excuses of not receiving), was paid out within 3 days.

Bike was covered as a specified item on my house insurance.

Sjoe, you're a patient man. Don't you deal with a broker?

Nope. Prefer to deal direct and get facts first hand rather than via a 3rd party

The excesses are rather high, but just take note that it is only applicable in case of partial damage. In case of total loss AND you have send them proof of ownership and photo's (which can be uploaded via app) prior to the claim, there is no excess.

BTW, there is no average applicable to all risk items at Disco.

Are you sure about that?

I asked a Discovery agent that very question a week ago and was informed that it was averaged.

Advised them at the time when asked how the crash happened that was a crash at the CTCT race. No issue that it was

I am insured via Santam. Their documentation also states that they do not insured you bike if it is used in a race...but it is if you do league racing or if you get money for doing the races.

For this reason i request confirmation if i will be covered before every race / fun ride.

With King Price.

My wife called yesterday to do the annual renegotiation of our premiums. When done, the lady on the other end offered 1 extra item per vehicle at R1 PM regardless of value. My wife insured both our bikes. Sorted. Full comprehensive insurance - for R1 per bike.

Standard Bank does this as well. Add your bike to contents for R1

iCycle has just changed to Bidvest and Compenduim. I have just had two claims in the space of 5 weeks and both were settled.

They also cover any racing even if you a Pro or overseas.

Yes, I have a policy wording and there is no average clause in the All Risk section.

Check whether Average clause is under general or under the Household section. If under General, it will apply to all sections (possibly).

Best is to get it in writing from the Insurer, better safe than sorry.

(also, bear in mind that All Risk is technically a sub section of your Contents sections - some policies won't allow you All Risks unless you have Contents too)

If you are referring to SBIB, it's because they also sell KP policies. Their in-house policy does not have this R1 option.

Just received a response from Discovery:

“Please pass our sincere apologies to the client for conflicting information they received from client services.
We do not apply average on all risk - Client will be covered up to the sum insured / replacement value under the all-risk section.”

So basically, don't bother over-insuring all-risks items and expect a bonus.
