Front Derailleur

What is the difference between a 3x9 front derailleur and 3x10 derailleur? Will the 10spd fit on a 9spd bike both do have triple chain rings?

Thanks

I run my same 9 speed front after going 10 speed. No issues found although have noticed wider vs narrow made set up of front bit more finicky. Stayed with a triple up front as well.

10spd chain is narrower and spacing between chainrings also slightly narrower. You can make a 9spd FD 'work' with a 3x10 setup but the dedicated 10 spd FD will shift better.

My problem is that searching for a FD most online shops only stock 10spd derailleurs. I do know the 10spd setup (components) is narrower. Is the 10spd FD cage so small that you will have the minimal clearance for a 9spd? The current setup is 9spd.

If you're matching the 10sp FD to a 9sp shifter, then it will move the same amount that it's meant to.  The only difference will then be the size of the actual 'cage' that moves the chain, and that can be tuned to match.

BTW - 1x FTW  :whistling:

@dirtypot this is for my buddy, he is not ready yet for 1x. Possibly next year...

If you are buying a new FD I would rather stick to the 9 speed.  Pay a bit more through a shop and avoid the issues.

Ok so I may have misunderstood initially .....

You are building a 9spd bike for a buddy and want to know if a 10spd FD will work on a 9spd chainring set. Is that right?

If so, rather follow David's advice and go to your LBS and order the right stuff, or phone your online store and see if they will source it for you. The online guys don't always list everything they have access to.

Using 10spd FD with 9spd or 10spd 3x front shifter will work ok but the FD's steps will be a little smaller than desired for the 9spd chainrings so you will have to bodge the settings and limit screws a bit. Marginally narrower cage may also rub on the chain more than usual when crosschaining.

@JXV not building a bike but the bike belongs to my friend. Recently the front derailleur broke, phoned a couple of bike shops and most of them only stock 10spd derailleurs hence going online to check. The only find is an Alivio derailleur which I'm not to keen on...My friends bike is a neat Trek dual suspension with full XTR groupset and wheelset...old bike because its a 26er and 9spd.

The steps will be exactly the same size.  The amount of movement is dictated by the shifter, not the FD.  The FD just does what the shifter tells it to do.

The only difference is the size of the cage which may cause minor rubbing issues at the extremes of the cassette - but then you should be shifting onto a bigger or smaller chainring in the front anyway, so its a largely moot point.

how does ur friend feel about the Alivio shifter? would an Alivio 9spd shifter not work better than a 10 spd xtr shifter?

nothing wrong with a 9sp alivio FD. Solid bits of kit, those.

The problem with CRC is that it will not be delivered in time for this weekends Magalies Monster event.

If time was not an issue I would've opted for this route.

Then the alivio, or a 2nd hand one from on here, is your best bet.
