Event Name: Wolseley MTB Funride
When: 13 August 2016
Where: Mountain Ridge Winery, Western Cape
Category: MTB

The Wolseley MTB Funride Event consists of 4 main routes which start and end at the Mountain Ridge Cellar (8km from Wolseley). There is a 60km, 40km and 28km route, as well as a 8km kiddies ride or Trail Run.

The routes are designed by our local Epic cyclist, Neels Zeeman. They start with a gentle climb before descending to the Breede River, with a necessary tar road crossing over the river. The routes then follow farm tracks through the local orchards, meeting the famous Waterval Mountains at Verrekyker Farm with an epic climb of Kluitjieskraal Pass lying in wait for the 60km riders after the split from the shorter routes. The 40 km follows a climbing jeeptrack and various loops along the side of the mountain in the Kluitjieskraal Forest land before returning to Mountain Ridge through more local farmland. The flattish 28km route is aimed at the more inexperienced rider and returns from the bottom of Kluitjieskraal via farm roads and orchards.

After climbing the Pass, the 60km route skirts the hidden Suurvlakte plateau before ascending out the valley and then descending the sometimes treacherous jeep track to the Waterfall crossing, where bike and rider will get a bit wet, depending on the depth of the river. The route then returns via the lower forestry ground, but along energy sapping undulations such as Ben Hur (Rooibult), where the gradients can cause a pride-denting dismount before joining the shorter routes for the home stretch.

Mountain Ridge Cellar will be the hosting the start and finish of the event. They will also be open for wine tasting and sales. The monthly Ramkiekie Farmers Market will also be happening at the venue, which is a market consisting of local produce and crafts. There will also be food to eat, a pudding table with real traditional puddings, and hot coffee available.

Once you have finished your ride there are hot showers available, and then please join us at the Market for some replenishments, live music and enjoy our warm local hospitality.

I totally agree Sparki, this is the kind of challenge that just feels so good to complete, not to mention the scenic route. Been doing it every year since 2011.

Since the Swartland mtb event which was always held on the same weekend (which I personally thought was a nice ride) died a quiet low key death I opted for this one.

Looking forward to be riding in Wolseley for the first time!

Are you referring to the Koringberg MTB ride that started from Misverstand dam? It used to be the weekend after Wolseley, is it dead now?

You are right, was the weekend after Wolseley

Seems dead - not on the PPA calender & the facebook page has not been updated (at least the last time I checked)

Dammit, what a loss. I remember in 2013 how we waded through BB deep rivers. That climb up Koringberg was almost as much fun as the ST going down it. Pity it's over.

Oh well, we still have Wolseley!
