Spinning bike maintenance

Bought a 2nd hand spinning bike a few weeks back.  Needed some TLC, but got most of the things sorted that I had problems with.

It is a Trojan Inverno 300.

But taking care of a spinning bike is a bit different than a bicycle.

One thing.  That felt pad...  Who knew that it must be oiled?

Thus far I took the bike apart.  Cleaned the chain (was full of grease) and the sprocket.  Oiled the chain with a quality chain oil (not wax but proper oil).  Next on the list will be to replace the bearings of the wheel.  Just need to take the wheel out, but getting that 19kb beast out is not a lot of fun.

I used a fair amount of silicon spray on the pad.  Fixed the resistance as the previous owner relaxed the resistance till the nut fell out of resistance setup. and greased all the bolts and nuts of the bike...  Anything I am overlooking?

I have had a spinning bike for two years and had no idea the pads need to be oiled. I have probably done over a hundred hours on it.

Do you know why they need to be oiled?

Only thing I have done is kept the chain clean and properly tensioned, otherwise all I do is keep it clean.

The maintenance - on mine at least - is pretty basic.  Replaced the chain, bearings and BB when I got it.  What I did do is change the fixed sprocket for a free wheel one.  I just used a cheap BMX part.  A decent saddle, pedals and ready to roll.

Fact is I hardly ever use it as I prefer the real thing, even in winter.

Also had no idea that the pads needed to be oiled and I did many hours on mine. Although it did screech horribly if you set it on too easy a setting, maybe that is why.

Mine had a belt instead of a chain, it actually worked very well.

Getting the right hand side crank replaced after the thread stripped was a nightmare, involved asking favors from some people at a metal working shop.

My brother works as a bike mechanic, and part of his duties are to keep their spinning bikes in working order and he gave me that as a tip.  It will prolong the life of the pads.  He told me to use mineral oil, but silicon spray will work as well.  The one website I found said you can soak the pad and spin away, but it will chuck a fair bit of spray.

I gave mine a squirt this morning.

I have wondered if I should open the BB and replace the crank set while I am in there.  Would love to have a sealed unit in there, but as it is not going to see the road I see no need for a sealed unit at this time.  I am shopping around for new pedals.  But still waiting for the cycling shop to get me a set.  Have to get platforms for the wife as I see no value in getting cycling shoes for her as the most KM she did on the bike in the past two years was 10 km and the bike does not have 100 km on the clock yet.

I have done one stupid thing though.  I lost my Polar HRM's speed sensors.  I had two, but can't fine them now.  Not sure if I chucked them.  Found the cadence sensor so can use that at least...

But one question I do have...  Why would Trojan grease a chain and not oil it...

Problem I have is that I can't see very well anymore...  So spinning is one way to keep fit.  I have found that I struggle to see when at speed and when there are loads of dust in the air. I would also love to be able to cycle every day, but I risk a lot every time I am on the bike.

I am also fading fast.  Luckily I am a roadie and do not cycle alone.  Rely very much on the youngster's eyes and reflexes. (I'm a class one wheel sucker!)  My hearing is the main bugbear but my eyes are definitely deteriorating as well.

Hey francois, is it because of age or a medical condition?

Medical :( if it was self inflicted it would have been okay, but it is a family problem.
