thanks HR .

going to have to try get a test drive on all these bikes

If you do manage to test drive any of these bikes, pls let me know how you organised. I'm also in the market, but it seems very difficult to get bikes for a test drive.

I'm looking at:

Mongoose Canaan Elite

GT marathon 1.0

Giant Anthem & Trance

Merida Mission 2000-D

Commencal Meta 4.2

Felt is unfortunately out of my budget range.

Currently the Mongoose is top of my list due to cost vs components.

Anything GT/Trek hard tail will get you a kick ass bike. Top components too. Dont let them bullsh*t you with anything less than XT XTR.

As a MTB newcomer, will I prefer SRAM X.7/X.9 combo or the full XT on the Scott?

Or must I look at the frame as more important?

It all comes down to the shifters. Do you like to shift both up and down with your thumb (Sram) or up with your thumb and down with your forefinger (Shimano). BTW, the new XT you can do either.
