Getting dizzy during races

You should really try this. I had similar issue and got a big fright. I was out riding and had pushed hard and then stopped - took a few minutes and I started to feel light headed - actually passed out and fell over. After it happened a second time I went to doc. Did stress test, ECG, heart sonar at specialist and could not find any problem.

I now do two things differently and have not had the same problem again. 1. Make sure I am properly hydrated and use electrolytes in my bottle. And 2. Don't stop suddenly and just stand - I try and slow down my heart rate from max before stopping or keep walking for a bit once I get off the bike. This seems to allow my body to adjust.

You are one of the small set that this happens to regularly - if you have a sudden incident, you can also try using the valsalva manouver - this might also help.

I am sure there will be video on youtube to show how it's done.

Thanks. I will test it next time I feel it coming on.

My performance has been nose diving over the past 2 months especially on longer rides. Progressively worse dizziness, cramping and nausea. Doc didnt help much. Last week about 20km into a race started puking my lungs out. Didn't get the guys name who stopped to help and as it was about the same distance to the finish as to go back decided to at least finish. So we rode together for a while and he mentioned he'd had something similar from an expired energy bar. Anyway, eventually made it and thought about what he'd said. Got home and checked the date on my drink mix... 8 months past expiry date!

As I'd only bought it 2 months ago it never occurred to me to check, although in hindsight I did notice a increasingly peculiar smell and that it was becoming more and more difficult to disperse the powder. Also on shorter rides I usually just take water and didn't have any issues on those... Guess the next long ride will prove or disprove what I'm saying but I'm pretty much convinced I found the problem.

Cheers and good luck

This caught me out very badly this year(more than once sadly) with products not past expiration daate, but a lot of these sports drinks have taken all preservatives out of their products.

At double moon by the 11th hour of racing I could smell and taste my bottle had gone off and the fluid I had drank in the hour or so leading up to that realisation had already upset my stomach. I had an interesting following 12 hours stopping to throw up every few minutes and trying to get as many nutrients into my body for the second 24 hours of racing.

Needless to say I am very nervous now anything that says 'preservative free' can stay on the shelf. I often mix bottles the night before and leave them in the fridge and have been fine for years until they all went preservative free. But that is stomach issues more than dizzyness usually?

I think you need to be weary about that mybulen pill before the race...

But i want to stay away from the gel/carb drinks/anything that contain any higher amounts of sugar.

You could try a product like Whasp (the keto one), but that is aimed more at the LCHF individual. It'll definitely need to be something you need to work at getting used to. Michaelbiker puts it quite well in his post about getting your body to burn fat.

One thing that is worth debating is that when TdF guys want to go fast, they seem to be chomping carbs (gels etc), whereas a fat-adapted racer will be able to further and longer with less calorific input, but not necessarily faster. It's all about what your goals are.
