Berto, even though he is something of a fading force, is still a smart tactician and canny racer. Amazing ride from him!

Berto must just stay on his bike and stop crashing ????

Some skills lessons from Sagaaaan to refresh him will prove useful

If they stuck to the rules only 91 riders would start tomorrow the rest were all outside the time limit.

But the organisers will no doubt look the other way..

And Brailsford would have a fit as ja..besides Froome I think all of sky came in after time limit.

***WATCHING THE REPLAY COMMENT***

At 99.6 km for the red jersey, watching Valverde and another rouleur mess with the chasing train, surging and stalling

And, in turn, isolating Froome Dawg as an unintended result

Fantastic racing

He must hurry up and get those lessons from Sagz before they part ways, hey!

But ja it would certainly help Berto's cause if he can stop having crashes and/or bad luck. That said there's a fair few younger riders coming through that's out performing some of the older guard and that older guard includes Berto. Berto is still a damn fine rider and hugely entertaining to watch!

The official Vuelta website hasn't been updated.

ProcyclingStats shows JJvR was a DNS just below 70th position.

Am I the only one happy that Froome eventually had a bad day without his team for support. It's not that I dislike him, but he didn't have his team to control the pace and was unable to react to other riders that were a little smarter (on the day).

Ja.. Froome perhaps relies too heavily on his team.. and it's quite clear that the team sky have at the Vuelta is not nearly as strong as the TDF. The tactics sky use can't work all the time.. Maybe that's the problem when you only focus on the TDF..you perhaps neglect the other GC and how you prepare for the season.

Sky did a lot of work yesterday, Movistar were very smart today in taking advantage of that. Had Froome not found an ally in Astana the gap would've been a lot bigger or Froome would have had to do a lot more work.

Still a lot of racing left..

Froome rode negatively and perhaps gambled on orica closing the gap?

Go back to may 2015 Motorola stage.. and what Astana did to Bert and how he responded.

What an amazing day out!

We just drove home from Biescas via Fiscal - so we did the middle of the stage in reverse (drove down the climbs they rode up) and I can only say that I bet the tv didn't give an accurate impression of how long and how steep they are!

Short report and pics to follow - waiting for camera battery to charge.

And the Chris Froome Appreciation Society wants us to believe that Beefy Berto isn't the best GC rider of his generation! :whistling:

As for Froome, he got but slaughtered today.

Yeah riding the TDF and RIO as opposed to riding on fresh legs will do that. El Dopo tried it with the Giro and TDF before and got slaughtered.

His own choice.

It's incredibly hard to do the double..be it GIRO TDF or TDF Vuelta double.

I think today Froome was just outsmarted.

Yep. Outsmarted. But it was Contador that did the outsmarting. Quintana was alert and followed Contadors lead. Movistar also nailed it when they saw the chance.

A great day racing. I'm well pleased for Brambilla. And Quintana actually. Sorry Contador couldn't finish it off. I'm now hoping Froome makes a comeback.

Yip..Bert blew that race apart.. and you know the signs were there that he was making plans before the flag dropped..and when the flag dropped tinkoff were very aggressive.. how sky didn't see what was coming is a mystery.. we could all see that something big was going to happen.

Also worked out well for Bert that Nairo was with him and a lot of Movistar in the chase disrupting everything.. and you have to love the way they did it.. so so smart.
