Mine was 6 weeks - broken in 2 places. Was on the IDT in 2 weeks. Still a bit sensitive for about 10 weeks.

Hey kids, dad is home. Well, well, I was back very slowly after 8 weeks ileum(feel that if you sneeze), 3 ribs moer toe (enough for 3 days in ICU), scapula (10 screws), collarbone few places.

Its been 10 weeks now, havent gone offroad.

But I'm not doing freedom challenge, maybe you can keep Latrinus company, he is fat, unfit, got no leave, unfit, ha, ha.

Ribs depend also on tissue damage.  Damage to the tissue can take a long time to heal around your ribs because you stretch the tissue every time you breath, sneeze, cough or laugh.  Took me three weeks to be riding 160km on the road after I cracked my ribs, although my first ride back was the Jock route.  I was up on the indoor trainer within 5 days though - sitting upright and not moving my upper body.

My tissue damage was pretty bad though and I couldn't sleep on my left side for about 8 weeks after the crash.  Didn't stop me from riding the Etape, and I don't imagine it would stop you from riding the Freedom Challenge.  I imagine you will be a little uncomfortable.

i was back onthe idt after about 2 weeks after i shattered mine (3 pieces were left with gaps in between) and had it plated. took a bit longer (about 8-10 weeks to be able to actually ride though cos of the soft tissue damage. just remember that you'll be off again for a bit after the plate gets taken out.

the recovery fromt he shattered collar bone was definitely much quicker than from the dislocation the following year.

I am quite experience at this done it 3 times on 3 separate occasions (left x 2 and right x 1). Never had an opp. All depends on where the break is and how many nerves are in the area.

A rule of thumb test is when you can lift that arm above your shoulder without 2 much pain and assistance you can probably ride.

The 1 st time for me took about 4 week and the last time I was back on the bike within 3 day - I had no pain and still rode the Argus 2 week later in a sub 3!

so getting on the IDT is ok?  Various (cycling) friends have advised me to just heed Dr's advice and not do anything for 4-6 weeks (fractured ribs) but I think I might go insane before then.

it's only been a week and at this time on a Saturday morning I'm normally cruising the Spruit Cry

any training advice during this 'recovery period' will be welcome

You can ride on the IDT without even moving your upper body, so the strain on your ribs is unlikely to be any more than you would experience just breathing sitting on your butt.

My doc was very certain I could get on the IDT as soon as I felt up to breathing heavily.  Then again he rode 6 days of the Epic with his cracked ribcage tightly strapped to reduce the pain after a heavy fall.
