1 x 10 range extenders vs whole cassettes

I have extender with 16 T on my bike, my son has the Sunrace 11-40. I think the Sunrace is an excellent cassette.  I would go with Sunrace, is looks like SLX quality, the one I have.

So what is the best option to go for, the One-up 42T + 16T on a XT cassette, or a whole cassette like a Praxis 11-40? Anyone tried the Sunrace 11-42 yet, best price:

Any other options to be had?

I'm on my 2nd Sunrace cassette, 1st one got over 5000km but replaced before TB due to some shifting problems caused by wear. I was surpised to see Sportsmans Wharehouse in PE stock the 11-42 10spd for R1000. Good price imo.

Cool, will try and source local then, the Sunrace seems like the one to go for! No problems with the normal XT der and its cage? I think it's a long cage by default on an Anthem 29?

Didnt work for me at all,

Bought a 42t Rapide ring

installed it by mechanic at my LBS on a new cassette and chain. The shifting was always slow and jumped all over the place!

The ring looked legit but didn't work for me at all!! Reverted back to my old 1x10 with no extension and never been happier.

Just as a matter of interest did you also use a 16?

Yep I did the one supplied with the 42t, I feel that was the main issue - the fact that it wasn't shimano -  at about that range where the 16t is - the jumping started, past that point going up was fine again!

If you already have a XT cassette with useable life left on it then the converter gears might be cheaper. Run it by alternating several chains on a regular basis to extend the milage.

If you want wide range 1x10 and don't have a convertible (XT or XTR) cassette then probably cheaper to buy a dedicated 11-40 or 11-42 cassette.

Shimano 10spd XT M786 med cage (GS) derailler has enough capacity for 10-42 on many full sus frames but if your frame has a lot of chain growth when the suspension moves then get a long cage RD.

If you will have to buy a new 10spd cassette and a new RD and some new chain/s to go with it then why not upgrade directly to SLX or XT 1x11? You can keep your 10spd crank and chain ring. The 11speed upgrade kits are often discounted and you can get SLX 1x11 kit in the region of R3.3k to R3.5k or XT for R4k to R4.5k

I use the Kalbo extender kit. Works fine but I had to space the chainring in a bit and adjust the b screw on my RD. It doesn't shift onto the 42t as smoothly as the big gear on the normal cassette but it has been 100% reliable.

My XT cassette has about 3000km on it, and it's starting to act up a bit lately, so probably time for replacement in the next 2 months or so.

Thing is the Sunrace cassette is cheaper than the OneUP extender 42 and 16 combo, so leaning towards a whole cassette replacement just on price.

How do I know which cage i've got on at present?

Look on the cage or under the derailler mechanism. Model number is molded into the part. It will say something like RD-M786-GS

RD = rear derailler

M786 = XT 10spd shadow plus (with clutch)

GS = Medium cage

SGS = Long cage.

I converted Shimano CS-HG62-10 (10-36T) cassette with the Kalbo 40 extender. Just sawed through a few pins and it works fine. So cassette does not have to be XT or SLX.

I agree with some of the posters here. The shifting to the big ring on my 40 extender conversion does not work as well as the shifting to the 40 on the standard Sunrace cassette. It works OK though, but not perfect. Sometimes it does not want to come down and you have to drop two at once.

Reckon I'll go with the Sunrace once my current XT is even more vrot than it currently is. It's starting to give some hints of end of life, some double taps required in certain sprockets that are used most. That's the thing with 1 times, more wear on certain sprockets on the cassette and less on others.

Having to shift up or down 2 gears to get the chain to move is more likely a shifter/cable/RD wear issue than chain/cassette wear.
