Listen to the guys here. Don't buy a Makro special. You will be sorry. We have tried to help fix these bikes before but it's not worth it. They just keep on breaking. The parts are very different from brand name bikes so you can't just replace with better bits when they break. The riding experience is totally different. You will hate riding and it will become an inconvenient dust covered obstacle in your garage.

The R1500 you spend on a used bike you will most likely be able to recover if/when you sell it. You won't be able to give the makro bike away.

Help us help you:

Are you looking for a ROAD bike to ride on the road or a Mountain Bike to ride on the road?

What size bike are you looking for?, Alternatively how tall are you?

Do you have budget for shoes, safety stuff (helmet and gloves) and clothing or just planing to ride with Tekkies and shorts?

Makro are really great, and they have a returns policy which is very generous. Buy your dishwashing liquid, your scotch, and your printer there. Or anything else. But NOT 'your bicycle. Or your wife's bra.

Stew, I'm gonna tell u what u want to hear....buy the totem bud, however the advice you already got here on the hub is all good advicenand u should soak it up. You WILL be better off using the money and hire a bike every time u okes want to ride. Other than that...buy the Totem bru...lol

first: ask yourself - why are you cycling ?

second: ask yourself - how much time and effort am I going to put into cycling ?

Third: Cycling on a proper bike is cool.

If you just like to go round the block and the promenade with a maximum ride effort of 30 minutes once a month  - a makro bike is perfect ..

If you planning to do some proper riding - listen to guys here regarding used bikes ...

You must be quite tall then!

This would be a far better bet than a Totem:

24" might be referring to the wheel size.

Stew: what is your inseam?
