Fox 34 vs RockShox Pike

Hi all.

Given the option of a 2016 Spec Stumpy FSR 6Fattie with Fox 34 for R68k or a 2017 Spec Stumpy FSR 6Fattie with RockShox Pike for R88k, which would you take?

Please note there are a couple of differences between the two bikes such as XT brakes vs Sram Guide brakes, as well as the rear shock, BUT I am not really bothered by those differences. So my question is this: Is the Fox 34 2016 model much worse than the Pike? Or is it just down to preference between Fox and Rock Shox?

I have already pulled the trigger on the 2016 model, so this thread is just kinda for interest sake...

Technically, there are no longer any 6Fattie models in Spez' FSR lineup of bikes for 2017.

The bike is either 650B or 29er, with the 29ers being plus-compatible.

Yeah... that is true! But I'm only interested in running plus tyres haha yet my reference to the 6Fattie..

Both are good forks, but If you have that much to spend why buy a Spaz?

Coz I love my Spaz (seriously though, I just think they are in a different class - but that's just my opinion haha).

Taken it out for a few rides now and I am loving the 6fattie set up, and overall feel of the Stumpy!

A friend of mine rides one which I've played around on, those 3" tires have seemingly endless grip! Rolling resistance isn't great tho.

There's some other great bikes in the 140/150mm travel range in that price range.

Yeah, there is, but the main thing that drew me to this bike was the fact that at any time I can swap out the 27.5+ wheels for some 29er wheels. This may not be a big draw for most people, but I use the bike for some aggressive stuff as well as longer rides, so it was quite important for me that I can fit both of the wheel types...

But hey, all personal preference at the end of the day.

I don't know how many of the previous posters have actually ridden or owned both. I currently own and ride both (older model Fox 34) and the differences are much less than you'd think, especially since the Fox 34 you are looking at is most likely the newer model introduced from mid 2015. If curious get the 4 digit code off the fork and punch it into the Help page at www.ridefox.com . You'll get all the details including year and any custom valving or air spacers fitted at the factory.

The Fox 34 from 2013/2014 had a (undeservedly IMO) poor reputation due to its weight and apparent lack of plushness on small bumps at low to moderate speeds when compared to Pike. Both of these characteristiscs were fixed in the 2015 release which is some 200g lighter and has better sensitivity with a new damper. Fox ditched the CTD damping for a better Firm/Med/Open platform valving system that has the low speed compression adjustability in the Open mode (like Pike RCT). Most reviews of the newer version rate it as good as or slightly better than the Pike.

In SA the service kits probably cost more than the Pike's.

I have the 34 Factory Kashima 140mm CTD model from 2014 on a SC TallboyLT. It is the supposedly 'bad' fork but I have no issues with it. Well made, reliable and the faster you go the better it performs. I rate it better at speed than the Pike on my new bike but this might be because I don't have the Pike fully dialled in yet. Also the Fox 15mm TA is nicer to use than the Pike's Maxle....better feel and I find it easier to remove/replace the wheel.
