How Much Freewheel Spin

Yes, the pistons seem too far in. I did use a tyre lever to push them back last weekend but didn't seem to move much.

The levers feel good and bite well. I have a shimano block, would that work in the avid brakes just to try get them back further or should i just bleed them?

Hi Alan... Only so much one can advise remotely. I would need to eyeball it to be more specific. As long as it is not dragging so much that it holds you back, do a few short rides to get those brakes bedded in .... say 25 to 40km... then re-assess.

Those need a bleed. The pistons aren't retracting far enough, so there's either too much fluid or a bubble.

I'm guessing that when you push one piston in another pops out?

i had exactly the same issue. Xt ice tech rotors in avid brakes. Tried to push back rotors so would spin freely but the Pistons moved as droo said.

Had them bleed and hey presto ,spin for ever . Problem solved. And I was told same thing about the rotors thickness .

Sweet, a bleed seems to be in order. I bled my own XT brakes on my 26er as I bought the bleed bits like that funnel and syringes but now I have Avid which are a bit different. Will maybe take it to the shop this time round.

You can download the bleed instruction from website. You'll need a SRAM compatible bleed kit to do it properly. 2 syringes, 2 short pieces of tubing and 2 adapters that screw into the bleed ports (if still same system as older Avids). I have used Shimano bleed blocks in Avid brakes before but not the 4 piston calipers so I don't know if they'll work properly.

If your brakes bite properly with no sponginess in the lever then you only need to release a few drops of fluid from the caliper joint to reduce the volume of fluid in the system. You can hack this without a bleed kit just by loosening the bleed screw and squeezing a few drops of fluid out by activating the brake lever. then tighten the bleed screw before releasing the lever. Pistons should retract further after this. 3 to 5 drops. Use plenty paper towel to absorb the DOT fluid and don't allow any to get onto the pads. Wash off after. That fluid can damage paint.

If you release the brake lever even a tiny fraction before securing the bleed screw you WILL suck air back into the system and a full bleed will be required.

PS i take no responsibility for this hack although I've done it before. Proceed at own risk. It may save you a trip to LBS but if you get it wrong you'll be going to the LBS anyway......

Ok great. My pet hate is squealing or any noise on my bike but will give it a few rides to settle. Perhaps this will also free up the wheel a bit and make it spin more freely.

Use a small dab of copperslip on the back of the pads where the pistons touch. Squealing will cease.

Hahah..I do not have steady hands and am rather clumsy. Bleeding the XT brakes was a rather messy job but got it done in the end. I will invest in a AVID bleed kit soon though. Thanks
