Hi - I have a Giant Anthem 29 X1 2013 large and want to upgrade to a 2017 (or 16)  model. I am thinking about simply buying a new frame. Will that be the most cost effective plan? I see that right now I could maybe get R 20 k for my bike and a 2016 Giant Anthem 29 X can be sourced at about R 29k. That boils down to a R 9 k upgrade which i can live with but I would like to know what a new frame costs and even then whether it will be a significant improvement on what I have.  Has anyone done this exercise?

A 2016 Giant Anthem frame will cost you about 14k, maybe a bit less if you negotiate a better deal.  29k for a complete 2016 Anthem is a damn good deal.

Understand the itch to upgrade but is there anything that you are not happy with on your current bike?

Can you buy frame only?

2013 Giant had OD2 fork/steerer and the new ones don't. Are all your parts transferable? Check seat tube diameters the same, headset, fork travel, rear axle type, bb, rear dropout etc. Your stem is likely too long for the new frame .

Cost of all the parts to correct various incompatibilities can add up so make a list and check before pulling the trigger. It m8ght be best to sell your old bike and buy a whole new one .

If you are considering a 2017 frame just be aware that the 2017 frames feature boost technology so you will need to look at a new back wheel or rebuilding your existing wheel.

I bought a 2016 frame a few months ago, stock is limited though. The seatpost is the same diameter (30.9) and the rear comes with a choice of qr or 12mm thru axle. You should be able to get bearings that will allow you to use the overdrive steerer in the standard tapered head tube but best you confirm this.

In your case, sell the old bike and get the new Anthem.

No hassles with parts working or not plus everything will be new so no maintenance hassles for a while at least.

I think you are being very optimistic with your bikes value.

I sold a 2014 Large Anthem with upgraded wheelset, 1x10 conversion and a upgraded 120mm fork and I struggled to get R18K for it a year ago.

Your bike is now almost 4yrs old remember.

I would say sell your bike and get the new one (2017). The 2017s have boost, new trunion mount, and a whole bunch of other upgrades that will make transferring parts a costly exercise. And all the new upgrades are pretty dam sweet - so I would get the 17 model if you can!

Your valutation on your bike's second hand value might be a bit high though - I sold my 2016 Trance for 20k.... Guys might be advertsing for 18, but that's not what they are getting.
