My cycling partner bought a Trek Fuel EX 5 a year ago and at the time it came equipped with a Rockshox EX 32 fork which in our understanding is a spring fork. He is keen to upgrade the fork but neither of us are with what without breaking the bank obviously. Any suggestions. He is not a downhill specialist and weighs in the 90 odd kilos.

What budget won't break the bank?

Theres no point in putting a 20k fork onto a 20k bike so not really sure wha the options are but would imagine 5k would be a good start. Wouldn't it?

you need to know to maintain the geometry of the bike so I assume you have a rockshox XC 32 coil fork at the moment with 100mm travel ?

tapered steerer ?

you want a better ride you need an air fork ... that's going to cost somewhere between 6 and 9 k and you will I assume have to factor in a small fitting charge at your LBS(unless you know how to fit it yourself)

don't buy second hand forks unless you really know what you are buying/talking about :whistling:

my suggestion .. if you have a relationship with a LBS or with the dealer where you purchased the bike go to them and discuss your options ,they may give you a trade in rebate on your old fork (or not) but they can give you options and fit the new one and you can go back if you have problems/warranty issues.

why not ? If you like the geomerty and feel of a bike a good fork and wheels can make an a average bike, feel pretty damn special to you. But obviously budget is key.

One thing I have learnt about upgrading and waisting money. If you going to upgrade ,do it right first time, even if you have to save a bit before shelling out on a really decent worth while piece of equipment. If you only upgrade slightly and not sure if it's even better then imo why bother. Ride what you have untill it fails .

A goody fork is expensive granted. But will never disappoint you and YOU WILL KNOW you have upgraded properly.

MRP Loop

Will tick all the boxes without breaking the bank.

oh and this without any doubt . As far as breaking the bank mmmm could make you teeth clench though ????...but oh so worth it.

Yes there is. The 2 best places to spend money on upgrades are fork and wheels. That said, if I were him I'd go for a Rockshox Reba. About R 9k, servicing is cheap as chips and you'll battle to break it. And he can extend it to 120mm by swapping out the air spring if he feels the urge.

Just check if his front wheel can convert to QR15, and if it can then do that at the same time.
