I am staying at Magaliespark this weekend.

Is the road ride around the dam any good.?

Do I set off towards the dam wall and then flow around past Broedestroom back to Magaliespark. i.e. clockwise ride?

Looks like about 50kms

It can be busy, with NW drivers () and it has very little shoulder/emergency lane, but it is quite enjoyable. Probably best to go very early and in an ACW direction (avoiding those nastie right hand turns at the various junctions). Climbs over Saartiesnek (sp?) and Commando Nek up the heart rate a little. The descent down Commando's - from N to S, is very lumpy due to road works (unless they've smoothed that out a bit?).

I live there, and only recommend that you do that ride on a MTB. If you want to do a road ride, take the bike to Sangiro Poultry farm on the R512, where they will allow you to leave your car,  and ride out on the Hartbeeshoek road. You can go to the T-junction and back, which is 60km, or lurn left at the T Juntion, and right past Maropeng to Magaliesburg, which is 80km, or go through Magaliesburg, turn right and go past the Bekker school to the Hekpoort T where you turn right up Hekpoort, and at the top turn left back to Sangiro, which is a 100km ride. Or go to the cradle!

Have fun!

Gimme some timeshare, please!! I used to basically go there every school holiday as a child from 0-16 years, then my folks sold the timeshare. I so badly want to go back, but they don't accept day visitors!!

I have never cycled that side of the dam, only through Harties (other side from Magaliespark). But I have driven there a lot with the bakkie. The road surface would be my biggest concern. You will suffer a few flats with road tyres. There has been some rain the last week or so. The area is notorious for its potholes. Rather head out as mikeking has said.

I didn't do the round the dam loop. Just did fourways past lanseria on the R511, right towards pelindaba and left and up over Saartjies neck and down to the wall then turned round after some sight seeing and went the same way home. Agree the traffic wasn't to bad earlier on. The reason I like a mountain bike is the pelindaba road is very narrow so when you hear it's a truck or a bus behind you then you just hop off o to the gravel.

Took it slow and heat got a bit much but left at 6:30 and got home around 13:00
