Variables in FTP

Any reasonable research in power studies should calibrate the power meter. I mean actual calibration, not Garmin "calibration" (which is zero-offset only, and doesn't include the slope.)

You should also understand the power measurement method used to predict the impact of temperature or humidity changes.

Since this trainer rubs against your tire, you should confirm tyre pressure and tension. This will make a huge difference.

You should also move your saddle back to confirm the massive change.

And you should check the data gathered for any gaps and accidental zeroes due to data dropouts.

edit: my bet is on tyre tension.

Physiologically it's unlikely to see such a large change in FTP in a short timeframe, unless there's something seriously wrong like a blood flow constriction.

Tyre pressure is consistent and tension is done to same method (certainly not done according to torque but to "number of turns"). 10 minute warm up prior to spindown via wahoo app. I haven't verified the change by checking repeatability, and probably won't as I did not enjoy the knee pain! Although I concede that unless demonstrably repeatable, my observations are purely conjecture.

My interest is in what those variables at play are. What factors will improve pedal power delivery efficiency and what affects the efficiency of the muscle/fulcrum (efficiency over the joint)? I'm sure my little observation is a combination of off day+comfort+what I ate for breakfast, but the repeatable variables that have an effect on FTP considering no change in muscle physiology must be the holy grail of team physiologists.

How often do you ride and what would you say your fitness level is? because 176w at 86kg is 2w/kg. That's right down the bottom end of the scale where I would put someone who had never ridden a bike before. 234w sounds a lot more realistic.

Maybe go back to your old setup and retest to confirm the results.

I am quite unfit, started riding regularly about 3 months ago. Did a few of those midvaal race way 40km races, times around 1h35.
