Thanks.

Just hope the bruises on his hands heal quick. He may have torn a tendon in his one hand. We will see tomorrow. He was so excited at getting batched in 1A for Sunday's Stellies Tour. Now he might not make it. Hoping for fast healing this week.

Seems like the best solution would be to make use of a pace car to protect cyclists. I see these often weekends in different places. My friends wanted me to ride round the peninsula yesterday. I politely declined as they started around 7 - 7:30 which is way too late for me. I would normally start around 5am and home by 8am.

***  I have to give kudo's to touring busses. I have not had a single incident with them since the1m bylaw was introduced ****

They used to regularly cut corners.

Not for me two weeks ago.  I was nearly taken out by a Mega Coach tourist bus.

I was cycling in the direction of Noordhoek from Hout Bay along Chapmans Peak, and right at the top where the view point is, the coach came past me going around the left hand bend.  While doing this he had half of the coach on the wrong side of the road (keep in mind that it's a completely blind corner) and over the solid white line.  However half way around he tightened his line and pulled the coach right up to the left hand side of the road forcing me into the gutter as I was braking as hard as I could.  The driver then proceeded to dawdle down the other side allowing me to easily over take him.  When he eventually caught up to me again half way down Noordhoek Main Road he hooted and pulled up next to me.  Expecting an apology I looked over at him - he gave me the finger, laughed and then pulled away.

I contacted their head office as I knew which bus it was at an exact time and even got a photo of it on Noordhoek Main Road.  They apologized and said that they would be looking into it as they have a zero tolerance view on traffic offences (definitely more concerned about the coach driving across the white line than they were of me being pushed into the gutter), but that was it.  Definite sour taste in mouth.

I'm not sure if it's the same in SA but in the UK busses and coaches often have an "emergency engine stop" button. It's usually behind a little flap on the rear cover of the engine.

Next time a driver tries to kill you and then gives you the finger, open the little flap and press the button. He'll have to get out the bus to reset the button and you can discuss his behaviour face to face.

Personally I believe that road riding in SA is an unacceptable risk in SA.

You can get run over anywhere in the world, but the fact is that SA seems to be the perfect storm of road riding risks: little to no dedicated cycling infrastructure to seperate cyclists and motorists, poor traffic law enforcement intended to address driving behaviour, high levels of drunk, inattentive and aggressive drivers, taxis, busses, trucks, and so forth.

Personally, I just won't ever risk it.
