Easton EC90SL flatbar dented......safe for use?

I installed the bar very carefully using carbon paste and a torque wrench making sure to adhere to the 6nm stem torque and 3 nm brake lever torque. When I installed the left brake lever i heard a click and upon inspection saw a hairline crack where the mount was in contact with the handlebar.

I then removed the bar to inspect the clamping area and there were 4 indentations from the clamp (installed at 5,5nm which is 0,5nm lower than the stem manufacturers max torque of 6nm). Bar instruction states to use stem torque specifications.

I have installed many handlebars and have never seen a bar crack at 3nm torque. I am quite sure that it is just the clear coat but don't want to take a chance.

Any carbon specialist out there to tell me whether this bar is safe to use? Where can it be tested/scanned for carbon cracks?

CRC already replied to me and said that they have had many warranty claims rejected and they will not claim from Easton. I find this surprising seeing that I followed the instructions to a T...... what recourse do I have?

Thanks!

Cut that up and bin it - asap

Edit - you might want to check with the importer on whether that bar is genuine or not - Easton bars don't crack that easily - but there are plenty of fakes out there - see carbonboy's ritchey bars that broke.... he has a thread somewhere here...

Are you using a carbon or alloy stem?

Alloy stem/carbon stem - carbon bar ...my rule is to torque to 4nm when it says 6nm. I also torque 1.5 - 2 instead of 3 nm when fixing levers etc to bar. I have had the "crack/creek" before.

I would not use/sell that bar. Get another on. Your safety is worth more than the money spent on a bar.

If you find someone who can scan it let us know.

I am sitting with a ZIPP bar....a ladder fell on the bar and make so marks and I do not trust it now. Rather safe than sorry.

Is it a new bar? If so, wouldn't that justify a claim?

I'm not a carbon expert, but i'm with RockaRolla, wouldn't trust it.

I do not think so, it was damaged on installation but it is worth a try, maybe it has a structural fault.

Which is scary if that is the case.....

In hind site I should have gone with your torque values, but all previous heavier carbon bars was torqued a manufacturers values....without any problems...

I added this on to the original thread:

You might want to test your torque wrench for accuracy - there will be a service somewhere in CT that does it for you - my local toolshop has a free to use testing machine - www.toolshop.co.za bu there are several commercial calibration services available, and youtube has some hacks...

Good point, I need to have my torque wrenches done as well. On the wrenches it pays to buy a good one. I am a fan of Gedore and Norbar. Gedore agents will have a test rig.

toolshop has a test rig - in strydom park - take your wrenches there - he does not charge for the test, and he does not care whose wrench it is - although he does like norbar....

S.....happens. Products differ. Strange on an Easton bar although. We have an Easton MonkeyLite on on of our bikes for 4 years now and no issues.

I wonder how many carbon bars / bikes with carbon bars are sold with issues....
