Squealing brakes

Hi

Did a search for how to sort squealing mtb brakes, but Tapatalk is a mission again...

Any advise/guidance to sort squealing mtb breaks at home? I had new wheels built with new rotors front and back as well. But the pads are still the same pads. There are signs on the rotors that there are vibrations when the pads ingage - one can see the lines the pads are making.

Now, I heard from the LBS that you can use dishwashing liquid - taken between your fingers, and run it over the surface both sides of the rotor. Then rotate the rotor and brake hard. Wil this work in cleaning the rotor?

Too me, putting soapy stuff on that what should not be soapy sounds a bit stupid...

Any advise on how to stop the squealing?

Soap is fine on the rotors (only) just make sure all residue is removed.

Check your pads for wear - they should NOT leave marks on the rotors.

That could be metal on metal - not good.

Google and YouTube are your friends - use them.

I hope they cleaned the rotors before fitting some have a protective gunk on them.

Lose Tapatalk and search properly- this have been done to death

Apologies. I don't have adsl (a bit rural, don't even have city water...) laptop is down, and mifi is flat as well. We have only had 6hours of power the last 36hours....

So tapatalk it is. Even then just to justify frustration

I have a feeling that the rotors weren't cleaned....

The pads were ok'ish. Will have it checked again

Have you tried Q20 on the discs?

Don't. No. Really don't!

Heard about people putting the pads in a hot pan for a couple of seconds. Soapy water and brake cleaner will work fine

4 causes I've solved with squeaky /turkey gobble brake sounds

1.Check that the Rotor bolts are tightened properly...actually loosen them and then tighten them..as you do car wheel nuts..not in sequence but crisscross.

2.Burn the pads clean on a hotplate or,as  i've used those lighters with those demon flames.

3.clean the calipers remove from frame remove the pads, put something flat  between the pistons so you can push them back when fully out.(don't chip or scratch the pistons) drop the whole mechanism in a jug of warm soapy water ,pull break lever so pistons move out and in .

4 get new brake pads

Wipe your discs with methylated spirits, sand your brakepads a little bit,re-set them and bobs your uncle. Otherwise soak your pads is the spirits, set them alight, and re-set them. Either way, your cause of squeling is most probably oil based something that contaminated your discs or pads.

I found that moving brake sets between bikes usually brings on the dreaded squeal. What worked for me:

1. wash your pads, get them in the sink, apply dishwashing liquid to both pads and rub together, rinse, repeat until clean.

2. Kleen Green sprayed liberally on rotors and calipers, rinse.

3. Find a nice long preferably steep downhill section, try ride down with brakes applied continuously, the magic moment is when the squeal stops. You might get an occasional squeak  but it should disappear after bedding in .

Worked for me

Dont use old pads with new discs. Ever.

Fit new pads.

Make sure caliper alignment is 100%
