11sp Cassette and Freehub Compatibility

So, I've been thinking of going 11sp, but I've got a 10sp mtb hub.

As far as I know, you need to have an 11sp specific freehub for the cassette to fit, but then I read on Ebay and CRC that you only need a new freehub if you want to go road 11sp, but that 11sp mtb cassettes fit on 8/9/10sp hubs as well.

 

Is this true?

Partly true.  Some 10 speed road free hubs can be machined to fit 11sp cassettes - you need to remove 1.8mm off the freehub shoulder.  Some MTB cassettes are made to fit on a 10sp body by "dishing" the largest gear on the cassette so that it sits closer to the spokes than would be the case with a road cassette.  Campy did this on their 11 speeds, that is why the spacers vary in thickness and they all fit on one freehub size. In general though most 11sp cassettes are made for 11 speed freehubs.

11speed shimano cassette & 10/9/8 shimano & SRAM cassette fits shimano (normal) freehub. Only SRAM & e13 11sp cassette that needs an SRAM specific freehub cos of the 10sp & 9sp cog.

 

The ONLY 11sp SRAM cassette that fits a shimano freehub is the NX

All 11sp mtb shimano cassettes fit on normal 8/9/10 shimano freehubs. This is due to the dishing that jxv alluded to which may need a spacer depending on how extreme the dishing is

But in answer to your question. As long as you buy a shimano 11sp it'll fit right on your hub.

Any 11 speed cassette with a 11 teeth small cog should fit on a regular shimano/sram free hub. If you are looking at a 11 speed cassette with a 10 teeth small cog then you will need to replace your free hub with a sram xd driver.

Definitely. Shimano and Sram cassettes and chains are 100% compatible
