I got one for Xmas.

It has a slightly different form factor. Looks like this.

had a look at the video clip.

Lekker controlled conditions and the cyclist is relaxed.

1) The guy struggles to get the peashooter out of his back pocket.

2) He shoots at a frikken big, inanimate object and he still pulls his shots to the right and up.

Now try and get that thing out of your pocket when you are under stress: jy gaan sukkel.

Try for a head shot with only two balletjies: not going to happen.

Oulike masjientjie but worth absolutely f***all in a self defense situation.

Alternative that does work: Direct stream pepper spray.

And you are the expert.....

Different strokes.....

I try not to ride with bottles/bombs (round items) on my person in case I have a fall and land on said bottle.....

IMO the best personal defense weapon a cyclist could carry would be pepper spray, fits into a pocket easy enough and requires no training (and more importantly) very little composure to use effectively in an attack situation. Firearm is impractical as it is heavy (even a sub compact 9) and requires a fair bit of training and composure to effectively neutralize a threat/attack. Knife is a no no for several reasons, the most obvious one been the proximity to an attacker in which it would be effective.

Not to mention that the best way to deal with most attacks would be to comply, after all your bike is insured and not worth risking your life for. My suggestion (having twice been in situations of the sort) is to assess the situation and if complying would end the threat then rather just hand over and claim from insurance.

Get a bigger knife?

Yes, I am a expert.

But, please elaborate on your statements.

You can get the pepper blaster called Guardian Angel here at R800 plus R75 delivery. It's sold on Amazon at $40 plus delivery plus tax and then you end up paying the same. http://www.sharpedge.co.za/piexon-guardian-angel-ii-oc

I found 2 pepper blasters (kimber pepperblaster II) on amazon and neither ships to south africa. Things usually dont cost double from amazon unless ordering things that equal the shipping value.

Names doesn't matter. They are basically all the same.

Two things to take note of:

1) The expiry date, don't buy old stuff

2) The delivery system, small nozzles are the best

just to add to this

1 Expiration date = less pressure in the canister. the pepper will still burn as bad as ever, but the propellant will look a little rainbow shapes stream and not a strong forward stream

2 My local pepper spray shop stocks 2 types of delivery nozzles: direct stream (direct, concentrated, less susceptible to wind) and a misting nozzle that sprays like deodorant (this easily blows back into your own face and is unlikely to reach further than 1.5m with an outstretched arm)

as for the safety cap on the canister, i eventually took mine off because the time it takes to get a big finger under the safety cap is valuable. The canister i have doesn't accidentally spray in my pocket or spray immediately on contact of the button, so IMO the safety caps are unnecessary and can cause someone to not fire in time.

I seem to remember with a direct pepper spray that prior to buying you should check the concentration percentage as some are stronger than others.

This is true. there is a legal limit to the concentration and you'd want the can with the maximum concentration.

idd say any of these can also work - I am thinking of getting the batton

went to the shop and got me one of them extension battons and the sound of opening it will make me run and hopefully the skelms too. I have to say its the size of my hand pump and once extended if you hit some one on the wrist or face it WILL BE PAINFULL so its really a self defence weapon not an attack weapon - something to use when there is nothing else to do

my concern with spray is

1. wind can have an impact

2. Failure when you are in a situation for what ever reason

3. more then one person - they normally are 2, 3 or more

Not saying its not an option but perhaps its should be one of more then one option

Spray plus a backup something that one can use to self defend in close encounters

perhaps a Cape Cobra in a bag  with rip open red band - open trough and laugh you ass off as your assailant pisses his pants

I hate ripping my chamois, they are expensive.
