Advice on training for a newbie

Recommended Posts

Hi hubbers

I just bought my first mtb (last time I owned a bike was about 13 years ago).

I plan on doing some casual riding at Rosemary Hill and those types of places, but also want to look at doing some 40km type races for fun.

I don't own any of the heart rate monitors, power meters, etc.

How do I go about getting fitter and reaching the point where I can join a group for a 20-30km ride?

I have some fitness equipment at home (kettlebells, barbell, skipping rope).

From what I have seen I probably shouldn't be on the bike every day.

Look forward to your thoughts.

Just start off with time in/on the saddle.

2 to 3 rides per week and 1hr to 2hrs per ride.

Enjoy your riding and the rest will come.

Make sure your bike is a proper fit.

Do nor overdo it.

Aside from riding!

  • Eat well
  • Drink lots of water (Stay Hydrated)
  • Sleep 8 hours daily (If you can)
  • Enjoy the ride!

nothing like just spending more time in the saddle. And when you cant there is plenty you can do with that equipment you have at home. Just google some cycling related training.

oh and don't overdo it where you don't enjoy it anymore. Allow sufficient time to recover. A good rest day is better than overtraining.
