Riding around Simons Town

I've got got a gap to do a road ride from Simons Town, but only have 2 hours. I'm thinking of the Argus route from Simons town, but then going on plateau road up to the top and down Red Hill to complete the loop - I see I go past at least 1 informal settlement up top - anyone know if this loop has any danger areas?

If you're riding on your own I would not advise using this route. It's far too quiet on the road going past the informal settlement and it's only just alongside this that you could pick up a problem! There has been the odd incident along this stretch!

Rather do the longer loop staying on the Argus route till the left turn at Sun Valley and then back over Black Hill towards Simonstown or through Fish Hoek and back to Simonstown.

I live in Simonstown. I do Redhill on my own a few times a week. And there are many other cyclists doing it. I prefer to hit Redhill from the Simonstown end and go down hill fast at the squatter camp. I would not like to go slow up the hill past the settlement. Then I go past Cape Point and back to Simonstown.

I'd say do the full loop around and go through Fish Hoek and back along the Main Road.  It's about a 50km loop.  Not sure how fast you ride, but I can do this quite comfortably solo in about an hour and a half, so it's well within your time constraints.

Alternatively as Johan says is also a good option.

My 2c's:

Red hill from Scarborough side is good fun but much safer in a group. As a couple of the guys have noted it's better to by pass it altogether and rather do the loop going past Scarborough and snaking back towards Sun Valley where you have the choice to either go through Fish Hoek or over Black Hill and back into Simon's Town. The other alternative is to do that loop in reverse with the choice of going over Black Hill or through Fish Hoek.

I've done it yesterday morning with some runners on the road.

Did not feel safe though.

Rather go the long route unless you're part of a group

Is Blackhill the same as Glencairn Express way? Comes in near Simon's Town past the Spar?

That would be correct.

This look like a good option to you guys?

You'll lengthen the route by about another 5 - 10k's going through Kommetjie, however it'll be worth it as the climb up Slangkop has some lovely views of the Atlantic, Karbonkelberg and Hout Bay. And the cafe at the bottom could serve as a good rest stop/water bottle refil point.

Thanks - am I right that there's no through road on Slangkop - it would involve going up, coming back down the same way, and carrying on the route we left off?

Nope. That wouldn't be correct. Kommetjie is connected to Scarborough by a road that goes over Slangkop. It was a usual part of my training rides to Simon's Town when I lived in Kommetjie. If you want to follow the Argus route exact then you would have to take the right hand turn going past Ocean View and then turning right at the T junction to head back towards Sun Valley. Maybe just drive the route with your car before you cycle it. It'll give you a clearer picture of what you'll be dealing with when you cycle it.

Not trying to put you off but be vigilant when riding solo around slangkop area towards ocean view side. I rode through there alone at about 11am on thursday past and there was a suspicious guy hanging around with a golf club at the four way stop. Looked like he was up to no good.

Ah OK I think I've got it right as per your description, in the route map posted a few posts up? I.e. I think we're going Slangkop way

Watch out for the very sharp bend as you're coming down Slangkop into Kommetjie in the route direction you've posted! There's also the odd baboon along this stretch, but the views of the Atlantic make it more than worth it!
