Ok, but you have to admit there does appear to be some sort of stigma attached to riding a Raleigh.

I was just intrigued to know where it comes from. Could it be as simple as most of us rode cheap Raleigh's to school at some time or another?

Maybe its not possible for any brand to cater to an entire market. Sell cheap basic bikes and your entire brand offering gets tainted?

Remember my bike looks very similar to yours, so I would hazard to guess that you just placed some Colnago stickers on your Raleigh

Guest Big H

The typical Raleigh basher is a 1,7m tall executive that weighs 73 kg and has a slight boep and who is suurtiet because he bought a Sooper Dooper lightweight bike with a Spaghetti groupset and Kazonga deep section carbon fibre wheels for megabucks ....... R45k at least. The poor sod now discovers that his Sooper Dooper frame is made in the same factory as the Raleigh, the Shimano groupset is way better looking and more functional and the wheels on the Raleigh is better that his. He now becomes nasty and tries to shoot Raleigh down on some suurtiet remarks made by a clone of him in the starting blocks of the last race he cycled in.

Raleigh is still the best value for money with excellent specs you can get anywhere in RSA for a road bike, MTB or tandem.

Sure, but why is it bothering you? Do you want to buy one but feel you'll get laughed at?

It's much more fun to go past an expensive bike on a Raleigh cos you're a better rider.

And, in perspective R9k - R12k is a lot to be spending on a bike for a lot of us, so it's not cheap in that sense.

Listen to Big H he's talking sense.

Big H that is the one group and then you get the other group who's parents got him a Dunlop for his 21st and he had to watch his mate on they Raleigh's getting everywhere . And we all have seen the "fashion geeks" floating around the race start lines with their arty bikes , they also don't like Raleigh

<?: prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Raleigh riders are real people with feelings too. All real Raleigh riders should round up and rally against Raleigh bashing riders.<?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

People, people.... It depends on what you can afford...

If you can afford to pay for an imported ride (bicycle or car) that cost more but with lower spec than the local stuff, then do it. Cheaper is not always k@k, but I'll wait before buying something from Chin@.....

I own two Raleighs. The R6000A road bike and now a beautiful RM9 hardtail MTB. Both bought second hand at bargain prices. Very happy!

I was just wondering what sort of mentality enables me to buy a bike for a price such, that the value of the unused groupset/wheels etc on the bike is far cheaper that buying the equivalent new at any LBS.

I know a number of people who buy a bike, strip the components and then put them on another frame, not necessarily a better one, just so it does not say Raleigh.

If there is no solid performance related reason that makes us just that little bit uncomfortable to be seen on a Raleigh, then it says a lot about how gullible we all are when it comes to marketing

Ok, listen up, I rode a RC6000 wif 9 speed Shimano for many years. I can honestly say it was a fantastic bike. Great value for money, and the new Raleighs appear to be the same. It must surely rate as one of the top bang for buck bikes in SA.
