2017 gut and distance

no matter what you do in life...be it trying to loose weight...get fitter and faster there is one key factor... the percentage of commitment...what ever you put in will be the result at the end of the day.

for some of us all or nothing is the solution...you go into it 100 % you get 100 % results.

this journey is a good example...the percentage input varies and so do the results.

as a grandfather...father and husband and sole owner of a business i cannot commit 100 % to this journey...however i can improve myself by using the time and resources available to me.

this journey is not about becoming a world champion super light cyclist...it is more about showing others that there are challenges along the way and lots of them...if you dont achieve the goal you set in the time frame...it doesnt matter...so long as you dont give up.

one thread that stands out for me is the prince vlad thread...the fella set out to achieve a goal which was clearly out of his league...it doesnt make him a bad person...what disappointed me about it...he gave up...i hope to see a thread one day with him showing everyone his achievements no matter how big or small...just the fact that he is trying would make my day.

there are many times when i want to just give up...this weekend was a good example...there was a recovery vehicle...i could have just loaded my bike and got a lift back to Hillcrest...but instead i stopped had a small break ...slowed down the pace and kept going...finished the 100 km i set out to do...thanks to Nick for the moral support.

just keep trying no matter the obstacles...the journey of life is short...but sometimes it can feel like forever.

I need to read this thread daily as it motivates me a lot. Thanks as I am in the same boat.

What I promised myself a year ago when I started cycling again.

My cycling and health is a journey for the rest of my life and not a: I have to achieve this today. (I did that when I was still cycling competatively and I can promise you I did 18 to 20 hours a week on the bike and still had a full day job. There was no time for social life and also no time for recovery. I was obsessed.)

I promised myself that I am going to do it to enjoy it from now on.

I promised myself that it must become a long term lifestyle and not a short term goal.

My goal is to be healthy first and foremost and what I stuffed up over the last 14 years is not going to be fixed overnight.

That is why I can laugh at myself at what I said elsewhere on the forum. I am already breaking my own rule. LOL

Sit down and write a long term (achievable) goal which will be balanced. This goal must be focused on a healthy body and healthy mind. Then plot the journey to achieve it.

Training is part of it. Eating is part of it. Social is part of it. Your spirit is part of it.

Make time for all of it.

I had to make peace with myself a long time ago as I was on a destruction path of note. I sometimes raced so hard (as an amateur) against the Pro's that I never recovered. We trained/raced 7 days a week of which (track season we raced Friday evening on track at Pilditch, raced on the road Saturday afternoon. Did a recovery ride of 4 hours Sunday morning and raced at Hector Norris on Sunday afternoon.) We then trained Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Road season was even worse as the miles then increased a lot.

I trained at night winter and summer no wonder it eventually broke me just about. When I look back some of the wins was very nice and I will remember some of them for the rest of my life. Did I enjoy all the hours I spent on the bike away from family and friends. NOPE!

I was totally out of balance.

Im gonna put myself up as a example...

Started riding a bycycle at age 35 weighing in at a whopping 130kg december 2015..

Started eating "better" and entered k2c when entries opened for 2016 event.. Upped my training and went for it weighing in at 115kg.. almost died that day but finished with a time of 6:46...

Was proud just to finish.

So won a entry 2 weeks ago for k2c wich i wasnt planning on doing because i was still mentally broken from last year...

But now for the good news.. i went there weighing in at 97kg. I managed to knock 59min of last years time...

So with determination and hard work you will achieve your goals..so bring on 2018...one day at a time is the key....

101.2 kg...so close.

took a break from the sweat box for a couple days...battling with pain in my knees and the top of my legs just not recovering...felt a bit better today...even the chest pains have eased.

time is always an issue...i tried rowing but found it just as boring as the indoor trainer...gona try something different...instead of trying to do 30 min fast reps...i have set the machine to the hardest setting and do 20 reps...which i plan to increase to 25 - 30 etc.

eating healthy is on track...80 % focused.

its weekend always challenging with cupcakes in the oven...rugby at the stadium tonight and a visit to the super market...i have a bad a habit of getting a packet of hot chips...chicken nuggets and calamari strips to munch on while in the store...gona have to make a list and focus on getting the stuff and leaving without dropping a 5 star chocolate into the basket...i need program my brain to keep reminding myself that the 90s are just a kg and a bit away....and the shova is in a couple weeks.

gut is getting there...if i look down i can now see my toes without sucking in my gut :) ...yip i know... strange fella but i am excited.

Chest pains??

they like a pain in the butt...had them for a long time...i thought it was a heart issue went to the ER ...but i am told it is "ghost pains" from shingles after one of my hilti machines hit me in the chest while drilling a hole in conrete...it dislocated the bottom 2 ribs.

dont worry i have been to a GP and a heart specialist...they both say if i can get my hr up to 197 bpm at 52 years young while cycling and hold it while gasping for breathe up a steep  hill ...without dropping dead I am fine.

Good grief, if I had your eating habits, I'd also struggle to get below 100kg. The quality of your food is incredibly low.

How is your vegetable intake?

Don't you love quacks - the perfect definition of a one-sided test. If you drop dead, we'll give you a refund on the consult!!

during the week it is easy...

chicken or tuna or or pilchards with salad for lunch...

mixed veg for dinner...with a piece of meat.

3 fruits a day.

on the weekend...that is what we are working on at the moment.

To cut out the cup cakes...I have already cut back on the hot chips and stuff...this just became a habit.

what i have been started doing...as i go through the day i make small changes to bad habits...

started with breakfast...cut back on toast.

then coffee..cut back on sugar

then lunch cut back on bread

dinner...cut back on rice/pasta etc...portion sizes and second helpings.

then the evening snacking...this is proving to be a challenge...if i dont eat enough during the day and get home feeling hungry...the wheels fall off.

compared to what i am use to eating...i can see how my weight is trending in a downward direction...but more important...the gut is shrinking.

If I may ask, why are there cupcakes in the house? If you are committed to this weight loss, surely there shouldn't be?

dont joke...when i went to see the heart specialist he hooked me up to the machine...told me to climb on the treadmill and run...after a period of time i asked him how long do i have to run...his response... until you reach 175 bpm...if you dont drop dead you are fine...i didnt drop dead...he checked the print out and told me that if i am still concerned i should book in for a dye to be used to check for blockages...i never went back.

what he did tell me...the pains in my chest on left side below my nipple...might no be a heart issue...what he did tell me and i believe this is very important as i have spoken to people who have experienced heart attacks

if your chest from left to right feels like if is being pulled together you need to get to the ER asap

if you experience the above...your throat is sore and you battle to talk...best you get to the ER even faster...there is a good chance you might not make it.

thats why i talk a lot while riding...if you are riding with me and i go quiet...call an ambulance ;)

my 9 year old daughter bakes them and sells them every weekend(how she makes her pocket money)...if you go past the coffee guys and eat the carrot muffins/cup cakes R5 each... you will know why i eat them :)

they have carrots in them...they are healthy :)

I'm amazed, I've made it to the end of a hill rep session based on this!

during the week it is easy...

chicken or tuna or or pilchards with salad for lunch...Left overs from dinner ( no meat on veg )

mixed veg for dinner...with a piece of meat.Selection of vegies ( no potato , rice or pasta ) every alternate day 200grm of meat

3 fruits a day.Ditto

on the weekend...that is what we are working on at the moment.

To cut out the cup cakes...I have already cut back on the hot chips and stuff...this just became a habit. My wife loves baking so its hard to avoid a slice of cake at least once

what i have been started doing...as i go through the day i make small changes to bad habits...

started with breakfast...cut back on toast.Oats and fat free milk no sugar ( for the last 25 years )

then coffee..cut back on sugar  No coffee ever only black tea with sweetener

then lunch cut back on bread Only ever eat seed loaf with cheese

dinner...cut back on rice/pasta etc...portion sizes and second helpings.Ditto

then the evening snacking...this is proving to be a challenge...if i dont eat enough during the day and get home feeling hungry...the wheels fall off. Will power , will power and only will power will sort this out

compared to what i am use to eating...i can see how my weight is trending in a downward direction...but more important...the gut is shrinking.Like wise , i can now squeeze into my old  medium  cycling jerseys

I find that by making gradual changes to my eating habits its easier to get used to the change . Crash diets are for sissies because they never stick to them .
