29er Wheelset

I've just had Arch EX Mk3's built onto XT high flange hubs that I got for a steal from CRC (R700.00 for both to be exact).

Total wheel build was 5k.

Super happy with the Arch EX rims.

And yes, I know the XT hubs are'nt Hope's, but I'm a bit old school and like to be able to service and adjust my hubs and I am not worried about weight too much. Its a combo that works for me.

Thanks for the feedback Quinton. I'm myself not to worried about weight. I'm currently seriously thinking about the ZTR's that jcza posted

I had a Mavic Crossride wheelset and currently have a Rapide TR29 wheelset.

The Mavics were meh in my opinion; too heavy (I ride a steel framed bike and I'm no weightweenie, but they were noticeably heavy in the hand and on the rides) and too few spokes for my liking. I've only had extremely bad experiences with Mavic after sales locally, in fact I still have a bust wheelset that I bought brand new in 2013, only rode for 2 or 3 months before I had an accident and since then has been sitting in my garage as no one in Cape Town could rebuild them for me, and I went to all the LBS's I knew of at the time who were all in contact with Dragon? and some other big place.

On the other hand, I like my Rapides so much that I plan on getting another set of the same. Like now'ish. I've never owned a 'high-end' wheelset but the Rapides are decent quality, easy to service (not that I have done this yet, but I did strip them for fun), easy to find new bearings for them and switching axle standards is the easiest thing ever. I have mine set up on my gravel bike.

Thanks, this is very usefull feedback Yusran

I got the Rapide a couple of weeks ago but went with wider 30mm as I am buffalo cat. Great buy I feel and it comes with both Thru Axel and quick release options meaning I can run it on my Giant and Spez when needed

Thanks, they must have updated it as i was on their site earlier today and didn't see it then. How does the ECC Hubs compare to the Hope one's on the other ZTR's?

I have just built up a set of Crests on ECCs. So far so good. I have 100kms on them and I have no complaints.

The freebody sound is slightly more refined than the Hopes, because there are more pawls and engagement points. They come in various colours, and the rear comes with both Shimano and SRAM freebodies, in the box, as well as all the adapters to work with various axel sizes etc.

Over the past 2 years I have built 6 wheel sets using Rapide Components - In terms of price, quality, backup , reliability and easy maintenance , nothing comes close. Don't hesitate to spec the bladed spokes - they're awesome. Remember - when you you get a set of Rapide wheels , they're built by Wayne , and he's a dam good wheel builder.

Just to mix things up a bit - I just bought a set of Hope Pro 4s from Chain Reaction, and it was just under 4k to my door. Paired that with some Spank Oozy Trail 345 30mm internal width rims (I am heavy). Came to about 8k for the wheel build. Not too bad considering the quality of parts I got...

Thanks for all the replies. Helps alot.

I've got some thinking to do

Hi Andre,

I was wondering what you got in the end ?

Friend of mine got his Rapide's today ( TR29-25 ). I ordered mine today after getting a closer look at his.

I can build up a set of WTB KOM rims and sealed bearing ECC Components hubs for around R6k with double butted sopkes and brass nipples, offering excellent strength to weight to cost combination. Properly tubeless too.

Who built your wheels?

I charge R800 to build a set, ex parts.

MY 2C ....i was thinking of Arch Mk3 on rapide Hubs & bladed spokes ..this way you get a 26mm internal but slightly lighter and with rapides hubs you should have a great combo.
