What is the PPA doing?

I am going to ask. That will answer my question.

But I think we have stumbled across another very concerning point here, seems like nobody on the here knows what the PPA is doing about cycling safety  and they seem ok with that. Which is a shame.

I think that if they actively got involved here, they would get good input. Look at organizations that have positively engaged with the BikeHub.... CWC etc, there is merit is using any platform

you can't  get the hub members to make decisions, we can't even agree on wheel size, let alone tyre pressure or bar ends ..... let's not even bring up the stem / bar length issues.

Correct but can be done, We had a hubber Shaun Hannie who did exactly that, approached the road agencies for approval  to put up signs, received donations (I recall even BigH donated) for manufacture of signs then erected them, this was an individual who took initiative Not CSA, NOT PPA, NOT CGC.

Before any cycle lanes were built out to Table View area, riders were being killed or knocked over far too often. We ended up making a couple of these and wore them on our back packs for some time. A good few motorist actually responded very positively to the posters! Do something yourself, no one is stopping you as an individual to also promote and carry the Safe Cycling Message.

Please make use of my @CTCycleLanes twittter account to help spread the word if you can, or are willing to.

This was his initiative, his safety project was called sign up.

This is an individual, where are the projects from the cycling bodies ???

Good for him!

Yeah, maybe only the Andre's got it.

Might be they are notifying everybody in alphabetical order :P

Hairy, you seem to have more info than most on PPA, but its obvious that its second hand (I mean this respectfuly).

Do you have a buddy in the PPA or something? Where do you get the info from?

Email sent to Liz and Robert.

Let's see if they find it interesting enough to follow through.

A copy was sent to the editor, of the trucking publication too. At least I know him and is approachable on there matters. Two birds (different industries) one stone (stop the carnage).

Thinking about it, perhaps I should send a copy to CyclingSA's Secretary General - he seems to be the only one that replies (albeit from the race email address).

CTCT gets a lot of press and TV coverage - So, as a protest on

a)   'Cyclist road carnage' and

b)   'We want more action from PPA and CSA"

What about something like a 'delayed start' protest or  'sit-down' protest at the CTCT

We all sit for an hour before starting anyway - so not much extra effort/pain in a extra few minutes.

Only takes one guy with a poster held up in front of every bunch to explain what and why - to get a buy-in and participation.   Can also start advertising on Club sites, facebook pages etc to spread the news.

Can also have banners facing the press - with the above message - and the large yellow 'stay wider of the rider" etc road signs earlier on this post

Lets have  individual groups add a 1 minute (or 30 second) wait before riding - after their 'hoopla" and gunshot.

Or - perhaps get the first bunch to wait 5 min or so before riding after their 'hoopla" - (will delay all groups 5min)

That type of action/protest will be seen and reported by many media outlets.

(hoopla or  whoopa or whatever the f**** we all suppose to say)

It's ironic that the CTCT was started as a ride to show awareness for the need of cycle paths in Cape Town - 40 years later it appears a similar "awareness" is needed for cyclists safety on the roads. Someone with big kahunas/cajones needs to take this one and make it a day to remember.

Hairy, any news from your friends on what cycling Safety projects are on the roadmap?

Did I miss something. I was not aware I had to find out about Safety Project or planning?

I have heard through the grapevine that the 2017 budget is rather large for safe cycling and cycling development ... will see if I can get a better rough figure that is clearer than "rather large"

My apologies, thought you said you will try get a more detailed breakdown.

And less than half the previous years safe cycling budget.... that's not good.

Ok, so I understand that the screen shot posted reflects a change in how the spend was reported. Actual vs budget.

The 2016/2017 budget for safe cycling is around the R3.3m mark with development cycling at the R2.2m mark. Total Allocation = R5,439mil

So not all gloom and doom?

So we still don't know how that R3.3m is broken up?

It could all be one big "MEC Dinner/Meeting" for all we know ;)

Ah, but that is scope creak on your request for information :P

Approach the PPA and find out.....but come one ... let's try and get a little more of a open minded view here.

What do you mean?

apologies

I was (poorly) referring to your comment RE "It could all be one big "MEC Dinner/Meeting" for all we know" ... I know you are kind of joking, because you used a ;) ... but not all people who frequent this thread would take it with a pinch of salt....;)
