Any wannabees who can give me some info?

So I joined wannabees finally after two years in the Cape.

I'm looking forward to road riding, but there's not much info for the roadies.

Can anyone tell me what time the rides start, distances, and the speed of the groups, if there is a split? I've been lazy as hell the last few months and I'm hoping joining the group will help me avoid that a lot more and find some fitness.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Go check Wimpie van der Merwe's opinion about the club on his facebook profile. I used to be a member but have not renewed my membership the first time in 5 years.

oh oh ...... thats kinda ominous!

I mean the club is getting large. Ego's are bound to come into play!

At the risk of being shot, who is Wimpie van der Merwe?

Yeah I saw the whole social media blow up. To be honest though, I don't really care. I just want a road group that I can get excited to ride in.

I'll be honest, I'm not super stoked as I once mailed them to get some info on doing a test ride with the road group. Answer was basically that non members are not welcome, but I was welcome to try. Kinda ominous.

But it's fine. It's cheaper than cycle lab used to be, and it's not far from home at all so it seems like the best chance. Just a *** looking club shirt. Haha

Ag he used to be SA Champ (multiple times.)

From what I could figure out from the whole cabal on Vleisbroek.

He made a habit of joining the wannabees in their road rides because some of the members asked him to ride with. Then the club secretary asked him to stop, as he is not a member. Then after a while some of the members asked him again to ride with. He believes he can share his experience and enrich cycling for the club members. So he rode with the club a couple of times again. Then the club secretary asked him again not to ride with them. Then he mailed the chairman asking for clarification. The chairman didn't reply. He then threw his toys out of his cot in a long winded post a 'n fb about it. It blew up with people from all around the country adding their comments. Then the club members asked what the hell was going on. Their posts were removed. Things for ugly.

Eventually they had a sit down with Wimpie and explained the club's stance and (according to Wimpie on his fb posts kissed and made up.) Wimpie then made another long and rather snotty post about the whole scenario and explained why he doesn't need the club buy they could do with his input. He even likened himself to Eddy Merckx. That's when I got bored of the days of our lives and stopped following.

In short: Wimpie thinks he is God's gift to younger cyclists. The club wants him to join and won't afford him any special privileges.

What does this have to do with this thread? Well as with any big group of people the club has politics and drama. Kinder k@k eintlik. But there are many groups and you should be able to find one that suits you. The groups are organised over whatsapp, so poet on Facebook and ask to be added to a group and what type of group you'd like to join. They also have a lekker after ride vibe, and the club sometimes caters with snacks and a gazebo after races. They are not a bad group of people if you can get past the drama.

AFAIK you don't have to wear the top. At least the new one is less ugly than the older tops. Still not pretty. Maar een man se lelik is 'n ander man se vrou.

Yeah I own 2 of those shirts, personally I like them. People/cars can see you from miles away. Looks a crap load better than that old *** shirt.
