Is the rider OK? Can anyone confirm? This is the main concern.

It's going to take more than what is currently being done to get some results here! It is sad that the cycling bodies are either:

1 - Not doing enough to turn the tide amongst the government institutions

2 - Getting blocked through whatever official channels they could be following

It is going to take a concerted, massive public participation event to get the authorities to notice the concerns about this for us a segment of society. Can we pull this off and stay on message about the main objective being to not kill a cyclist without getting lost in all the other noise, about traffic laws and red lights and who was doing what? That will be the challenge!

Alan Windes office is open late on a Thursday (will confirm) to "chat" why can't we go and see him with evidence from previous hit and runs and ask what is being done about them??

Hope the rider comes out of it ok.

The fact that hit & run perps are rarely caught and bought to justice makes running from the scene very tempting I guess.

Add drunk driving / no license etc etc to the mix and it becomes a no-brainer. Flee the scene, keep your head down. Life goes on.

Not a good situation at all.

As a very new rider, posts like these are really scary. Hope the person is OK.

As a very old rider (35 years cycling) an a rider who uses that road at least 4 times per week. Post like this are very scary.

They currently doing road works on that road (not sure which direction the cyclist was going) but at times as a cyclist currently you end up in the middle of the road.

Saw a pizza delivery motor cyclist also down there a few week ago. Considering where his helmet was relative to the accident I assume he did not make it.

Alan Winde is the MEC for Economic Development. Not his portfolio.

David Grant is the MEC for Transport. Road safety falls under him at a provincial level. Cape Town roads on the whole are not his responsibility except for the freeways and Chappies and I think Cape Point road.

Cape Town's Mayoral Committee Member: Transport is Brett Heron. He is the person responsible for road safety, roads, cycle paths, bus lanes and our general well being when moving about.

I would suggest interacting with Grant and Herron and am very happy to help in any ad hoc committee that improves the safety of road users.

I would like to advocate average speed cameras on roads used by cyclists such as Spaansgemacht, Chappies, Suikerbossie, Victoria from Llandudno to Camps Bay as examples. Obviously there are a lot more roads where speed is a problem.

Except that Mr Winde is a huge advocate for cycling in and around the city and WCape. So he is a good allie to have in this kind of battle. He wants to drive the cycling thing as part of his tourism and economic portfolio.

No argument there. He does not have the authority yo change things though. The other guys I listed do.

I'd rather talk to people who can take action than those who have sympathy and need to talk to someone else to take action.

No harm though, the more people that lean on the authorities the better.

I only mention it as as far as I am aware his is the only public office open to members of the public where he will talk to them face to face. First Thursday of every month.

Not the hijack this thread or to give more bad news but there was also a cyclist down on Main Rd Muizenberg around 8am Sunday morning. We cycled past and looked like a car had turned left into the garage and hit them. The car was still on the scene.

Oh sweet jesssusss!!

This is completely out of hand.

It think that a if CSA and PPA does not take our crisis seriously, that they might need a disruption at SAs and CTCT, while all the cameras are on....

How about we all just rock up at the Grand Parade one morning and ride the N1. Block it for all vehicles like the Tow trucks did years ago. They got alot of attention. P@#$%^D a lot of people off that morning, but got the

message across.

Just a thought.
