1st Time K2C: Either new entry level 29er or 2nd hand slightly better

I'll be doing my first k2c and currently riding a Merida sub 60 26er. I'm thinking of either going for a new entry level 29er or second hand slightly better. Any advice?

I am tempted to say don't bother - rather save up for something better than entry level and just ride your old bike. If you do decide to buy rather go second hand and get a decent frame and fork. Drive train may require replacing of course which would add to the cost down the line.

Rough guide for a second hand bike in good condition would be 50% of the current replacement value. You can buy an entry level Titan (SLX spec is entry level imo) for R16K

or a Carbon 'Dale with XT spec for just slightly cheaper.

If you are not worried about things like frame replacment warrantees etc, I'd say go for the second hand bike.

You don't need anything special for K2C - it's just a gravel road.  A very scenic one, but not one that's going to require a fancy bike.

I'd always recommend quality second hand over crappy new.

For 90% of SA's mtb races you don't need anything special, but that does not mean a better bike wont make it easier and more enjoyable.

Hell you can do the Attakwas on a Single Speed, but that is not what the OP asked. That gravel downhills on the K2C will be a lot easier with a nice fork and quality brakes than a set of Tekro brakes and a Makro front fork?

But I do agree with your second statement.

I have done 8 K2C races and my fastest was on a 26" bike.

My advice would always be to save a bit longer and buy something other than the bottom of the range.

Ride your bike, save and buy something better when you can afford it.

(or put 25c takkies on your road bike and ride that)
