Spokes

Long Wheel Base

So after lengthy chats to Carbon29er I have decided to get some carbon deep sections for the tandem. Will source some U-shape carbon clincher rims from light bicycle(55 up front and 65 at the back). I am looking at DTswiss hubs, Either the 240S or 350. Now both hubs are available in either straight pull or J-bend. Google hasn't really come up with a definitive answer as to whats stronger/better. I know straight pull is less common at the LBS but with online nowadays not much is scarce.

I know there are a few wheel builders here on bike hub, so I am looking for their opinion as well as anyone who has experience with straight pull spokes. What are straight pull like? I have only ever used J-bend.

If I am able to get bladed sapim cx ray spokes that will probably be first choice. But any other suggestions on this will also be appreciated.

Thanks.

J bend all the way - as long as the builder has some skill.  Looks like you can get straight pull and bladed on line until you try to order!  You will then find long delays and minimum order quantities if you try to order anything out of the very common range (around 290 to 298mm).  Your rim profiles will need anything but common! If you want light go for Revolution/Lazer rather than bladed.

Your hub choice will depend on the tandem drop out spacing.

I have had good results with Light Bicycle rims.  Only one problem - which is being handled very professionally.

Carbon29er has advised me to also look at white industry or chris king hubs. I can see this taking a few weeks before deciding on the perfect option.

The reluctant thumbs up, I would like to argue, but he is talking sense.

Go with j-bend spokes. Easier to source, easier to build with, least expensive to buy.

Use double-butted spokes - best option for strength and weight.

Will the wheels be rim-brake or disc brake?

Rim brake. They going on my burley. No disk mounts at the back and has a carbon fork. Would love disks but don't have the bucks for a calfee.

The wheels will also only be used for racing, so I am not worried about over heating at all. You brake so seldom during a tandem race.
