Cradle Fall 26/03

I was riding on Sunday and saw a guy on a road bike had come down, in between the Lion & Rhino circle and Kromdraai Cafe, almost opposite the school Matala. His front wheel was seriously buckled and it looked like he'd gone OTB quite badly. I later saw an ambulance come pick him up. So firstly I hope he's ok, he was in a lot of pain, speedy recovery dude.

It had just happened when I got there but I couldn't see any obstruction in the road or nearby cars, so I've been very curious about what had happened. My assumption is a spontaneous front wheel buckle... seems unlikely. Anyone know the guy? Got any details?

Hope the rider heals ok.

Dont fret about the roadies, I saw a chick fall over right in front of me once in the cradle. 30 odd km/h and she fell over as if she was standing still.

Theres Ninja spooks in that place.

In general roadies tend to fall for no apparent reason

Just asking, was there people helping him?

Isn't that right where the speed bump is?

Coincidentally, and sadly, a few years ago we saw a rider pass away close to that spot - where the big logs beside the fence are, opposite the entrance to Matla School..

We passed him on our way out towards "the Caves" and he was being given CPR by another rider. There were lots of people helping already so we didn't hang around. When we came back half an hour later he had passed. His family were with him (it was tragic to see) but the ambulance hadn't arrived yet. If I remember correctly, it was in the Springtime.

No I just left him there...

He had a buddy with him, I saw them earlier, he'd gone back to him and then there was a group of about 4 guys who stopped. They looked like they had it under control. And I didn't have a special skill set to offer.

It was before the speed bump. I really checked on the way back for any potholes or obvious causes and couldn't see anything.

That's hectic to have seen that. Glad this guy looked like he'd be ok at least, he was sitting up and talking still. I'm sure he broke something in his shoulder though, or clavicle maybe.

It was a rough period in the Cradle.

3 weeks before we saw this guy pass, we came across another young chap standing at the side of the road near to the entrance of the Caves. He'd been riding with his step-father and another guy. The step-father had felt ill so he sat on a rock by the fence to rest while the others rode to the end of the road and back. When they returned he'd passed away. An ambulance had arrived but was not prepared to remove the body because it was already deceased - so they covered it with a space blanket and this youngster was left to sit with it while the coroners van was summoned. The third guy in the group had left to go and tell/fetch the youngsters mother. We stayed until someone came back. There was (maybe still is) a small picture and memorial to the fallen cyclist at the spot.

A month after the CPR guy died another rider was killed when he hit a pot-hole at the bottom of a descent over near Toadbury Hall. I think he was in a group and had nowhere to go in time.

As I say, it was a rough few weeks in the Cradle.

Hectic! I didn't realise there had been so many incidents! I heard of guy hitting a pointy bump in the road just near the lion park, it's been spray painted white with lots of criss crosses. the mother of the paramedic that worked on him told me about it when we rode past. He didn't make it either.

Always have to be careful and always be grateful for the time we get to spend on the road... you just never know...
