Garmin 920 XT

New Landy new life

This is my second Garmin 920 XT after the first one developed WiFi connection failure after 11,5 months.

They kindly replaced the first one, but now after 13 months the Altimeter and the WiFi have both died.

Did all the usual Hard Reset etc. but those two functions are  poked.

Pretty pissed off considering what this watch cost me.  12 months lifespan and wondering which part will fail next.

Not impressed at all.

A Garmin outlet reckoned they could open it and try clean the altimeter sensor, but that is about all.

After reading on the Garmin forum, seems the WiFi failure issue is pretty common.

Just a heads up warning.

Wait another month or so and get the Garmin 935

Edit: if you take your 920XT to Navworld, you will likely be able to trade in/up to the F5 or 935 at a reduced price.

Sadly the guarantee Garmin offers should be a tell tale of what they expect the lifetime of the product to be. I had a 735xt which gave up the ghost after 2 months. I have also had TomTom products that have failed after 6 months... Smart (GPS) watches are being launched all the time so one is in a viscious cycle of always buying new.

in my case I believe the reason watches don't seem to last a long time is that I swim a lot in salt water pools and the ocean. but I cant say for sure.

Are you having them clean the barometer port? Would be interested to know whether it works. I've got a two year old 920xt that I used as a daily, works 100%, besides the strap breaking.

I spoke too soon, while it was connected to my laptop a few minutes ago, the bloody laptop did a bluescreen moment (Reboot) and now the Garmin is screwed.

The 920  won't connect via cable to Garmin Express despite doing a few re-boots.

What a bad luck.  Let me see if Bluetooth still works - last way of syncing

You mentioned in your first post that you've done a HARD reset - how are you doing that?

Hold down the down arrow button while powering on the unit

Try this... a factory reset:

  1. Power off.
  2. Press and hold Mode and Enter buttons.
  3. Press and release Power button (still holding Mode and Enter)
  4. Release Mode and Enter once Power is released.

Most of my training is in the F/W gym pool, 3 times a week and the odd occasion in the sea, but I have only done fresh water triathlons with it.

I do however sweat an awful lot so the salt water could be from all the dripping from me.

I do rinse it in fresh water after every exercise though.

Found a couple of test screens accidentally while pressing various buttons. Seems barometer is out of order. Managed to uninstall and reinstall Express so cable link up is working again. So still wifi and altitude broken. Will try get Navworld to see their opinion on altimeter as I find altitude gain quite usefull on MTB races I haven't done before so I know when most of the climbing is done.063a924553f1c91ff273f1b1b37b7692.jpg7b3611ce86414794f844a16c2539e4c7.jpg2ca5dfa342eb758d2a8c968d97560eec.jpg
