Vee-Man on a different note - how do you transport your bikes ?  And how many bikes do you transport at a time ?

I typically transport mine and the laaties bike.  My previous hardtail and the laaities bike fitted okay on the Thule - https://www.thule.com/en/za/bike-rack/towbar-bike-racks/thule-xpress-_-970000

The TREK bike has the typical oversized tubing found on full suspension bikes .... it sort of fits on this rack, but not nicely .....

Ended up buying this - https://www.thule.com/en/za/bike-rack/towbar-bike-racks/thule-velocompact-927-_-927

The other reason for going this route - being able to LOCK the bikes on the rack ..... NOT nice when you are constantly looking back to the car to see that nobody is helping themselves to your new baby ....

This certainly should not be the decider for what bike you buy, just note the unintended results ...

I own and love exactly that merida. It is lovely and contrary to miles' assertion that its an out and out race bike i assure you it is capable of going slowly too!

Just gone through this same process .... bought last week .....

CWC - have a look at this MErida - http://www.merida-bikes.com/en_int/bikes/full-suspension/cross-country-marathon/2016/ninety-six-800-4319.html

I ended up buying from Cycle4Life in Paarl - Trek Fuel EX5 - cant say why, but the EX5 just "feels right" for me - more comfortable seating position, longer bike.

BUT, before you spend a cent - PLEASE do yourself a big favor and contact http://www.euodia.co.za/ in Hermanus. They have some really nice bikes on the floor, for really good prices ...

best of luck with the search .... so "lekka", and yet so frustrating .... :)

That red trim on the black frame is certainly one of the best looking bikes in this price class .... :)

My commuting bike is a Merida XT Edition .... LOVE it !  27.5.  NICE for commuting !!

Wonder which way I would have gone if CWC had a 800 to test ride .....

I have a bakkie with a canopy so I actually just lay it down in the back, pretty great :)

There is no way that everybody will enjoy a trail bike as much as a race bike. Tastes differ and it seems most people like to play race snake and for that a race bike is better. My taste and also the taste of most people I ride with is to go as fast as possible and would enjoy a race bike more for that reason.

Wat n pot stront!

The current 2017 version of the Merida 96 800 now comes with the complete SLX M7000 groupset   ....and the new Deore Boost spec hubs :D

It is 2x11 and all you need to do to make it 1x11 is to purchase the appropriate sized chainring and away you go. The 2x11 crank is the same crank that is used in the 1x11 setup  ;) . Use it...or don't....  :P
