Hi All,

After a recent accident/incident with a vehicle on the road I decided to stop road riding and take up mountain biking.....mountain biking is great and all but I miss going out on the road. Long story short , does anyone know if there are road training groups with a backup/safety vehicle over weekends riding in the helderberg /Stellenbosch/Durbanville areas?

I know Specialized Stellenbosch has road rides on a Thursday morning with a safety vehicle.

with all the incidents on the road and especially bottelary road its just not worth the risk for me anymore ( Being visible is just not enough)

feedback would be appreciated.

Wannabees in somerset west does that. But keep in mind they block the whole road with the backup vehicle so expect ALOT of irate drivers. They also promote riding on roads (like N2) which isn't legal. Also please make sure you are a member they hate it when people just join. Ask wimpie!

So your choice.

If everyone pitches in R30 and you get 20 riders the driver could actually make some money out of backup driving!~

Riding on the N2 is not illegal, riding on a freeway is illegal.

Hey Andri - that itch for a road ride is hard to scratch, much as I also love MTB.

Wannabees road rides Sat & Sun both have backup vehicles. Now we're in Winter they're typically quite a small group too - and often mostly the fast(er) riders. In fact sometimes too fast for me, but they're a nice bunch of guys. I usually manage to hang for half or so of the ride at least before I drop back with some of the more med pace riders. You'll be in your element with them though!

We also have a club Wed AM ride too - but it'll be way too relaxed for you. Def more of a mid-pace social. I think there may be some ad-hoc midweek road groups also though. No backup vehicle on those.

Also bear in mind you get the club trails too on the WB membership, and can opt for a discount annual permit for Heldeberg Plaas too on sign-up.

They are faster because they ride in winter ;)

I have met a few Wannabe dudes, and they are a great bunch. They didn't mind when I tagged along once, but if you want to join them a second time, I suggest you join officially and pay your fees etc.

Good networking too, lots of people will try and sell you houses

Yep - rule #9 working for sure ;)

Def need to join officially if you want to be a regular. Worth it tho - was pissing wet and the bike was filthy 2 weeks back when I punctured. That dude who hops out of the bakkie with a track pump and wet wipes to clean all the crap of your hands afterwards was worth it there and then.

They generally post on FB page - but not always. The safest bet is to ask them to put you on the WhatsApp group which nearly always gets a shout of the route and time the week before. At the moment starts are 7:30 at Lord Charles. Make sure you specify Fast Group for WhatsApp - come summer, they sometimes do split groups and routes

If you get your membership in quick there's a Winter Solstice night MTB ride on the 21st I think
