Rear derailleur bolt lost- replacement?

Hi Everyone,

I was riding at Rietvlei Saturday and my bike wouldn't pedal anymore on a climb. I discovered that my one jockey wheel fell out and the bolt securing it fell out too. This is on an SRAM XO X9 rear derailleur.
I freewheeled the bike back to the Hub where they helped me with a temporary fix with a steel bolt. This steel bolt however doesn't stay in place and also comes loose.
I've been to 3 bike shops, no one has an aluminium replacement bolt and
I've been to Alberton Hardware and they say they don't stock aluminium at all.

What I'd like to know if someone has had a similar experience with a missing bolt and how they corrected it, or if someone can suggest an alternative (like a steel bolt or w.h.y.) that would work just as well.

In the pictures attached is the temporary fix that doesn't seem safe to keep up.

Had a similar problem with one of the XT break lever screws that went missing. Local LBS could not help but found a spare at my cycle repair shop (BMC). Maybe consider a shop that focus on servicing mainly. They bound to sit with broken items that's been replaced. Just a thought. Hope you have success.

Also consider somewhere like a "Bolt n Nut" outlet. I've found replacement bolts from them for my seat post clamp.

What is thread lock?

Salvage one off a cheap SRAM mech?

Do you think any sram derailleur should fit? Thats a good idea though, thank you

I've used a waterbottle cage bolt very successfully when I lost this bolt on the Freedom Challenge. Same thread and does the job.

If the bolt keeps coming loose, check the pulley bearing. It may be seized.

If it is what I think it is, it still spins alright, but not as smoothly or for as long as before. Do you think this could have lead to the bolt loosening over time?

Yup. New pulley wheels, and some blue Loctite on the threads of the new bolt as a precaution.

Also when you get the bolt, take it to a bolt and nut shop and get a few spares. Not Builders or your local hardware store, a real engineering type place.

Agree with that. There's a company called Bolt and Nut down here in the Cape. Not sure what you have up there. Might have branches North side too.

Very good advice, thank you!

I've managed to arrange a replacement bolt from Kalahari Vegmot and will take it to a place that can source them.
