Converting from 3x to 2x10

I want to convert someone's bike to 2x10 from a 3x10 setup using the existing 3x front mech and 3x front shifter.

Ratio will be 24/36.

Is this as simple as putting the 36 where the middle ring would be(like with a 1by), and using the first click of the 3x shifter with the 3x front mech, and just adjusting the limiting screws?

Am I missing something?

Also look and see if there are spacers on the drive side crank moving the crank away from the frame. If yes, you could remove them to bring the crank closer to the frame to get your chainline right.

EDIT: or add spacers

Groupset is:

Acera octalink crankset

Slx shifters

Acera F/D

Xt R/D

No spacers on anything

You might need spacers to bring the crank in-line with the cassette. In a normal 2x setup you should be able to use all 10 gears in either chainring. Whereas on a 3x running small small or big big isn't really practical and often not even possible.

I just changed from 3x9 to 2x10 had to insert spacer between bb and crank (chainring hits on chainstay) needed spacer/washers on chainring bolt to to taken up slack of missing ring or use shorter single speed bolts

Bumpity bump. Where's myles?

trying to extricate himself from threads such as this, as it takes up a kakload of time....

But seriously. It will work. 24-36 is the limit of the standard rings and pickup points in terms of the gap between small and large rings before additional shifting ramps have to be put into place to help with shifting the chain up to the big ring (as is the case with the AM 38t ring)

Just ensure that the FDs limits are set up so that it won't shift into 3rd on the shifter, and you're golden.
