train a rescue dog

I need to find R 2000 to train a dog...anyone keen to share a few rand to make it happen?

I am going to make it happen even if i have to fund the whole R 2000.

I have spoken to a dog trainer who is going to go to a dog rescue facility and train 1 dog for 6 weeks...which will make the dog more marketable for adoption...

it is possible to train more dogs at a time...but we will need volunteers to assist...as each dog requires a handler...the fee to train 5 - 6 dogs at a time will cost the same as 1 dog.

this is no longer just an idea...it is going to happen as soon as i come up with the R 2000...where it will go in the future...only time will tell.

Sorry to have to say this but it is a waste of money to train a dog in a shelter environment and then put it back in that place. Shelters are very stressful environments for dogs and a majority of these animals shut down. Most dogs are put into a shelter because the owner cannot handle the dog.

Another thing is the person who wants to take the dog home must be the one who trains it. I have had to help many owners who have brought a very docile dog home from a shelter, and inside a week has become this unrecognisable villain.

If you are going to use that money then use it to assist the owners in the new home environment.

as i said i am open for suggestions...however i am going to try make this one work.

All parties involved are happy with what we are trying to achieve and we will go ahead and try it...if it doesnt work then i will look into other options to make these dogs more marketable.

i have the right person who is very passionate about his animals and training with many years of experience...from SAPS police officer to dog training to working with a USA based K 9 unit in IRAK.

I got a rescue dog which had been abused...beaten and used for breeding...i couldnt get my big boy and this female rescue dog to live together...he spent 20 minutes with the female and 10 with the male...they lived together without an incident for years...we have since introduced another rescue dog into our house...best thing i ever did...the fella is as happy as can be...my wife convinced me not to replace the old fella with another thoroughbred boerbul...glad i didnt...now we have 2 rescue dogs ...one of which is being trained by this person from Worcester via video.

The plan is to train the dog so that a suitable owner can be found...giving the dog a better chance of adoption...people who fund this project will be given first choice of adoption.

Baldrick...if you need help i can send you Deans contact details...maybe he can help you...the man is brilliant with animals...he lives in the western cape.

What does the volunteering involve?

We are going to experiment with 1 dog for now...so no volunteeers required at this point

The plan is for Dean to choose dogs which are due to be incinerated or moved to other organisation willing to attempt  to find a home...in other words... last chance...he will spend time with the dogs in an attempt to make them better option for people wanting to adopt a dog.

He will spend time doing basic training with the dog /dogs but as he indicated each dog has to have a handler...volunteeers will be required.

he can work with 5-6 dogs at a time...

we would like to get 1 person who Dean will train and over see...if it gains momentum...them more people.

i do realize i cant save them all ...but if i can save just 1 i feel at least i have tried.

in case people think there are better things we could be doing...my wife is involved in a blanket collection program which collects a lot of blankets which are donated to the SPCA.

i get s f^&*% pissed of when i drop my daughter at holiday care today and see a  heavily pregnant lab. digging in the rubbish bags...someone wanting to make a quick buck on selling puppies :( :(

i have put the project on hold for now...i need to understand how to do it properly...as baldrick mentioned it is a lot more complicated than just paying for a trainer to train a rescue dog.

we have adopted a rescue dog and take it for training on a Saturday afternoon to learn more and try understand what is involved.

I'm afraid Bakdrick is correct. Not taking away from the wonderful thing you are trying to do. In my experience it's not the dog that gets trained as much as the person handling the dog.

I hope there is something positive that can be done. It's a lovely sentiment.

Spent Saturday afternoon at dog training...

something I did notice was the amount of women dog handlers...which I believe is a very good idea...living in SA with the crime...I like the idea that the dog listens to instructions from my wife...if she can't get to a weapon she can call for the dog and instruct the dog to attack.

What I have learnt from going to the training and speaking to the trainers...a trainer can assist and get a dog to follow instruction...but the person who adopts the dog has to take the dog to training lessons...it is long term commitment.

It is not as simple as teaching a dog a list of commands...then leaving it to run around the garden for the rest of its life.

Sometimes a dog needs a good trainer to spend time "preparing" the dog for training.

The older the dog gets the more difficult it is train.

We have joined the GSD club...paid an annual membership and all the training is free.

80% of the people I work with are women. Men either can't be bothered or they don't see that they have a problem, or they have been forced to get help by their spouse.

I wish every dog owner would print out this statement and stick it on the fridge

Kills me when we have Piet Pompies and his stupid wife advertising 'purebred' puppies of some sorts on FB groups, Bumtree etc... when the shelters are chockers with 'Purebred' puppies, grown dogs and dogs that are not 'purebred' but who will still love you unconditionally....

We were going to buy another Boerboel puppy and do the training...

instead we have adopted 2 dogs...the mut in the pic above and a seriously abused 2 year old female boerboel...which was rescued in PE after they found her on a 1 m long chain...her eye and  paws have been burnt...the rescue people sorted out everything and sent her on a plane to Ushaka where we collected her...apparently the owner was using her for breeding.

she has never barked since the day we got her...apparently the previous owner would spray her with water if she barked...if you give her food she will take the food in the gentlest manner i have ever seen in a dog...she is the most placid dog i have ever owned...but i have seen her defend herself...you dont want to f ^&* with her....my big boy tried to put her in her place...he spent a night at the vet.

i have never been an animal person...dogs get fed at night and sleep outside...their purpose is to bark if their is an intruder or attack if someone jumps the fence...since being married to Lisa...things have changed.

My advice to anyone who is concerned about their family safety...wife and children...get a dog...let your wife spend 2 - 3 years training the dog...it will become the best defense mechanism you can own...it was awesome watching the dogs working with the women on Saturday...the women call and the dogs run and stand next to them...teach them not to take food from strangers and attack.

Good on you for not buying a puppy. I have 6 dogs. All rescues. 3 are border collies and the one pavement special is just as smart as the collies, the only difference being she is sometimes too smart and lets the collies rather do things for her! When we play hide and seek she lets the collies find the toy and then claims it as her own success!

The one rescue I got has taken me a good couple of years to build up trust but even now if you stand up too quickly or curse too loudly when you are on the Playstation she goes back to being afraid and hides under the couch. Sad to see...

They all sleep in the house with me, when my ex left I thought there would be more room on the bed for me but it didn't quite work out that way! I guess the next flame in my life had better be a dog person or it just aint gonna work!

Its funny how people can change as well, a friend had the opinion much like yours that dogs are to be fed and sleep outside...when I was at his house on Friday for beers the dogs now have a bed each in the lounge and I even saw him tuck one in under a blanket....! He has also taken in a stray Husky that the previous owner simply didn't bother to come and fetch from his house after he wandered off a few times.

This is true, the first thing they taught me was never feed your dog except in his own bowl, the dog must get used to only eating food thats in their bowls, this cuts out a big chunk of poisoning issues.

I have no problems with people buying or adopting pound dogs, I think its great, but its not for everybody and not all dogs from a pound are or can make good sociable animals, especially if they have been severely abused, this is important, especially if you have young kids, a friend of mine was talked into adopting a 6 month old Doberman which had been abused and was very skittish, he took it to socializing classes and later to training, but it became more and more protective and eventually only they could get into their house, sounds great I know, but when kids have friends over or the neighbor pops over for a beer or whatever the dog had to be segregated or it wouldn't allow them in, eventually the dog became a liability and they had to give it up for adoption again.

This time they got another puppy from a registered breeder and the dog is perfectly sociable, these are good folk and loved their dog, took it for training and treated the dog like a family member, but a big strong dog like a Doberman can severely injure a small kid very easily,... so Yes, check the pounds, but also know the dog breed you want and be open that if that dog is not available in a pound, there is nothing wrong with buying from a registered breeder, you are still giving the animal a good home where it will be loved and cared for, in the end thats what matters.

been learning a lot about dogs and how they behave etc...one of the things that stands out is how a dog can read your body language and sense you mood etc and will respond to different people in  different manner.

i now understand why it is not such a great idea...the dog would need to go to a person who has the time and patients to continue the training.

my wife has begun her studies to become an animal behaviourist...so all is not wasted.
