WTF type crashes

My WTF moment:

We were out riding on the R44 between Stellenbosch and Somerset West. This is a duel carriage way with a very wide shoulder. We were going at a nice pace. I was having a very animated conversation with my one friend. Not looking ahead, I rode over a heap of wood packed on the side of the road by a wood seller. Stopped with both feet on the ground.

The wood seller was swearing and my friends were laughing. I only had myself to blame. Fortunately no damage to me or my bike

One dark night out trainging something odd happened.

Let me explain first. This happened 30 years ago and at the time we had no lights powered by battery or otherwise We used a dynamo. For those who know it was a Millar light up front with the dynamo at the back wheel.

With the dynamo you could come to a standstill on a downhill if you dont pedal. So when I could I disengaged the thing because training for 2 hours is one thing. Using the dynamo it feels like double that.

Almost finished with the training approaching our area I switched the light off as the moon was giving enough light. Or so I thought.

The one minute I was still cycling and the next moment something jerked the bike from under me. That is what it felt like. Still cycling and the next moment the bike is gone.

I never had road rash like that ever before. My whole one side was raw. From my ankle to my shoulder. My ego was even worse.

What happened. It turned out ot be a pebble the size of a marble. Took my front wheel away sideways (as I drove over it)and I carried on without the bike. I guess I was doing about 30 km per hour.

Came short on Sunday at Hoogekraal. The trail is quite well marked so should not have had problems but ...

On the way down, just passed over the fence fly over trellis and zooming down the single track when I went over a little rise and got confronted with a jump. Should have stuck to the left of the trial and just used the pass by but ... tried to dodge the jump at the last moment and wham. Hit the dirt with my left shoulder and head.

I sweat a lot so suspect I must have blinked at the last moment and missed the signboard that highlighted this obstacle. Anyway, that's my excuse.

Shoulder damage was 8/10, could still ride but as I cooled down the whole shoulder stiffened up. My helmet did its job and stopped any damage to the noggin, but the helmet needs to be replaced. Thank goodness for that 1 year replacement policy.

Second time I ride Hoogekraal. First time was my very first MTB trail ride and I fell on quite a few of the tight switchbacks , walked the fence fly overs and and more. So at the moment my record is Hoogekraal 2 - 0 Pah Bear.  :whistling:

Hope I recover in time for Eselfontein.

I had a pretty stupid one years ago while I was still in school. I was riding in the street and did a sprint, head down (not looking where I was going) and crashed into the side mirror of a car that was parked on the pavement. It chipped part of my top front teeth. Not nice spitting out what you think is glass from the mirror and realizing it's your teeth and pretty painful as well. The dentist was able to fix it though.

I also had a more tame one where a dog ran in front of me and caused me to crash. Then there is the usual ditch in the ground type otb falls as well.

Haha...I just remembered one of my classic moments.

A mate and I decided to meet up at the Langebaan lagoon. I decided to use my mtb for an extended training session and ride up there from Blouberg.

My mate caught up to me just before the entrance to the park - he left later and he stopped and we chatted a few moments. He left and I continued only to discover that I had a flat. No idea how that happened, but perhaps an omen.

Anyway, after patching up, I continued. I had pushed hard from home until then and was feeling a little burnt out by now. I was nearly "home dry" and pushing the last km's. As I hit a small downhill section, I put my head down a bit and pedalled.....and suddenly crashed into the back of a car! Unbeknownst to me, the car that had previously passed me, suddenly decided to stop in the middle of the road. Before I knew it I was halfway up their back window and then lying winded on the tarmac. I feared the worst for my body but was quickly more concerned about my bike. Go figure. In any case, body was all fine just a few spots of bruising. And I thought the bike was fine too....until I spotted the tear just below the headset. Frame cracked!

Moral of the story: never take your eyes off the road. You never know....

I guess I'll drop this here.

Had more than my fare share of WTF crashes.

Couple of years ago at Cascades, DH practice run was awesome until I found myself sitting in the bushes.

Front wheel slid then caught up again.

No damage or Injury, wasn't so lucky on my last crash though

Flip, Cascades looks so awesome. I'd love to go ride there.

Tokai yesterday... just managed to clip a pedal while sprinting out of the saddle in the final section of Vasbyt into the Quarry. Thought I'd saved it and then at the last minute then, nope, cheers, bang, dislocated shoulder.

Had to ride out, load the bike in the bakkie and get home with a chicken wing before heading to hospital for some fine drugs a great doc and stuffing it back in place.

Funniest thing was I was demo'ing a Remedy (Clints bike) from the Uitsig Bike Park and his face was a picture when I wandered in with it looking like I'd been dragged through a bush and arm at a weird angle. Thankfully his bike was 100% but I think I owe him a beer. :)

Mine was 5 weeks ago - took a friend from the UK out on his new Jeffsy to show him my local haunts and give him some pointers. I laboured the pedal strike issue as we rode the rockiest bits I could find for him.  Great ride until I demo'd how not to do it. The irony.  A dreaded high speed pedal strike while pedaling hard for a rock jump. Instant pile driver and a very broken collar bone. Virtually unscathed anywhere else which kind of confirms what i knew which is that multiple contact points in a crash is generally better than just one.

I walked out about 500m where my friend fetched me in my car. A week later I had my first Ti component installed and although I still have pain the more I use the arm, the better it feels.

Ouch... that is such a beast. Broken or separated? I promise you it's going on the flats and peddling at pace that end in me eating dirt... and only in the last month weirdly. I should just inch my way along these perilous flat trails to the downs as it's nice and safe there.

A very displaced fractured clavicle.

Ya this was a flat trail too. Rock has become more exposed with tyres digging a bit of a channel next to it and with some late winter rain it reared its ugly head a bit more. It was hit so hard there were cracks in the earth radiating away from it... Luckily the bike only suffered minor scuffing from the fencing that caught it.
