Hi guys. With the TipTrans Cerderberg arount the corner im looking to buy new tyres. What will be a good tyre? I'm  leaning towards the Maxxis Ardents 2.25 UST/LUST Tubeless. Just saw at CWCYCLES the Vittoria Saguaro on special but only in 2.20. Feedback appreciated. Oh and im entered for the 115km ultra.

Can't comment on whether it is the right tyre for the job. But I got myself the Vittoria Special some time ago from CWC. So far I've done about 130km, grip is good (loads better than the Black Panther's I had before), and even at 2bar in the front and 2.2bar in the back the rolling resistance is fairly low, more than the Panthers but less than a friend's Maxxis Crossmark

Out of all the MTB tyres on special at CWC at the R400 less mark, best would be the Vittorio Saguaro. Good balance of grip and rolling resistance! Pity the Barzo isn't on special too cause you could use that up front for more corner grip.

If you dead set on Maxxis then go crossmark 2.1 or ikon 2.2 rear and Ardent 2.25 or 2.4 up front.

The most durable setup would be Crossmark 2.1 rear and Ardent 2.25 front as they both use the LUST casing which is slightly thicker and heavier than the EXO casing of the others.

or....for a series race setup Ikon 2.2 rear and Ikon 2.35 front but don't be too aggressive in the corners...

Would you do an Ultra in them?

I have never done an Ultra, but did a 60km ride on my SS Monday evening with no less fatigue than previously. If I was fit enough (and crazy enough) to do an ultra I would have no issues doing it with these tyres.

Im not very picky when it comes to tyres. My budget is R400 per ryre (cant belive im paying more then my Yaris's 14"). Im buying now and dont wanna buy again, i still have about 70- 80% on my chaoyang zippering's. Between the Siguaro's and Ardents, what would be my best bet for all round?

Im not fit. I do trail running but battling with my knee and are forced to take it easy. Ive never done an ultra or any big event. This will be my first and im the crazy type who like to push my limits. Training is about 100-150km per week. Time is limited due to work and i can only manage to squeeze in 60km then its dark and i stil have energy to go longer. Everyday train 25-40km per day with climbing included.

Maxxis ikon or vitorria barzo. This route is non technical and you wont need a lust tire. Ardent is a high mileage lust tire, but also heavy. I replaced mine with barzo's and the bike feel much more nippy. Just remember, the barzo wont give you the same mileage. I will always have a special place for the ikon and if I cant get barzo's I will fit ikon's.

Been saving my 10 000th post for a good reply.  :whistling:  :D

I did the J2C on my Barzo front ,Saguaro at the rear combo. (some stages of up to 126km)

Not a single problem, good grip, rolling resistance quite low.

I've got them on my bike still, with an extra set tucked into my garage roof to put on once this set is worn out.

So in my humble opinion, you cannot go wrong.

I've seen Saguaro's fitted front and back on quite a few bikes at this years Epic (like on Cadel Evans' bike) So if it's good enough for them, it's good enough for me.  :whistling:

I've been Riding the Saguaro /Barzo rear and front combo for 3 years now. And and my personal opinion it's the best tyre combo i've ridden. For a mixed bag of trails sand, mud ,gravel. The best thing about them is that over the years due to CWC specials they have actually got cheaper.

I used to run Saguaro front and rear, but when I switched to a Barzo front it was revolutionary!  So much more grip!  The Saguaro in the front is fine if you're just doing gravel grinds, but it's not so good on trails.  It's great as a rear tyre though.
I've recently switched to an Ikon rear and am loving it so far - feels grippier than the Saguaro, but I'm sure this will be at the detriment of longevity, but I'm happy with that.  One issue that I have with the Saguaro is that when it wears down to about 60% it has a solid band of rubber down the middle so isn't great for grip and it does slip under power (off road) but is then obviously great for riding on the road, but it's a mountain bike....

PS - pro's ride what they're paid to ride, so I put no weight in what they use.
