Also shopping around, seems the bike shops are doing pretty well as not too many bother coming back to me with a budget of R7-8K....

Best deal I have found so far is a Momsen 2018 AL129, airfork, 9 speed, tubeless ready tyres and shimano brakes....R7600

Just not sold on the colour but anyway....! Beggars can't be choosers!

I know 9 speeds are not 'in' but I have just replaced most of the drivetrain on my old 26in bike, and as this is a 9 speed so I might as well factor in using those parts...never actually had any issues with 9 speeds either...

When you live far from town going second hand isn't really an option as you can end up traveling around for nothing and just wasting time and petrol.

Had one moron waste almost of month of my time promising to get back to me on his Merida Big 7...so if you see that add on Gumtree...don't bother, he always has an excuse!

I hear you Mojoman! I couldnt even find something inn29" with an air fork from my lbs for sub 10k. I am more furtunate with the area though!

My bossman says he would like to get as close to R10k for the Merida as possible... My cap for a 26" hardtail is quite a bit below that mark, even though the bike is in good nick, mostly because I really think a 29" would fit me better.

The guy with the Silverback says he built the bike last year, the frame is a 2016 Sola 1, it has a 2x10 drivetrain with a mix of SLX and XT components, some new, some from a previous build. The front wheel and tyre is new.

The fork is leaking and the rear wheel has play, he was told at the previous service that the "freewheel up on rear wheel is tired" (I don't even know what that means) but he didn't want to replace it as we wanted to match the rear wheel with the new front, which he says is about R3k.

He wants R8k for the bike as is, can the rear wheel be 'repaired' and the fork 'serviced' to end with a nice bike for under R10k?

The image resolutions are a bit crap, I can go look at the bike if it looks worthwhile, it is just around the corner.

Components wise this looks like a nice bike!! However to a second hand rear wheel will probably put you back around R1500. I see there are quite a few wheelsets selling for around R2.5k-R3.5k. As for the fork, you'll have to wait for someone with a bit more know how. But in my experience a fork service can cost around R1000.00-R1500.00 (possibly more if there is loads of damage like the stanchions being scratched etc).

I can now get that bike for R6500...

looks like a nice bike for the bucks. Since you know the guy - why not take the bike to a good local bike shop (LBS) to get all the bits checked out and make sure its all 100% This is for the merida.

The silverback could have costly repairs to the fork and rear wheel. I would be very carefull. You could end up replacing the fork and rear wheel...

I should have been more clear, I can get the Silverback for R6500, the Merida owner would like to get as close to R10k as he can, I don't know what to offer him, I doubt he will accept less than R7k, perhaps even more. I have the Merida with me now, I will get it checked by my LBS. The Silverback owner has dropped the price from R10k to R6k5, think he wants the first one with the money to take it away.

I took the Merida for a quick spin this afternoon, and it feels great. It has new brakepads and the rear was more squeel than brake, but after a while it stopped squeling and started braking and made for a great ride altoghether. The fork is set a little soft, but he is a good 20kg lighter than me.

I think its a tad on the small side, unfortunately. The owner thought it was a Large (no sticker on frame) but after measuring it I am pretty sure it is a Medium, bummer... It did feel quite lekker after extending the seat to just past the "minimum insert" warning on the seat tube.

Checking out the Silverback Sola 1 tommorow, if that looks like a bad deal I'm back at square one, again.  :D

I have a large Merida pretty much the same as that with a mix of XT and Deore components with tubeless wheels for R10k.

I also have a large carbon Specialized Stumpjumper with XX drivetrain, Fox Fork and tubeless American Classic wheels for R10k.

Can send pics of both bikes if you're interested.

Hi King_Crispy, please do send pics, of both. Is the Merida a 26 or 29?

Are you from around here or are you willing to box and ship? 060 50 ate 3 vyf 7

Thanks for each and everyone's inputs Gents, I bought the Silverback Sola 1.

It fits me the best, has good quality components, a 2x10 drive-chain, I like the looks, it's a 29er, and I got it for a good enough price to replace the fork with a secondhand Reba or SID and still come out quite a bit under-budget!
