Chainline issues? noise from front ring

Bike is a 2015 Giant Defy - 105 mechs and cassette 11sp, RS500 cranks/rings

Problem - when in small ring, all is fine until smallest 2 or 3 cogs at the back when there seems to be a 'tinging' from the crank turns. I'm certain this is NOT from the FD from the sound and and eyeball check shows clearance.

I'm wondering if it's not a chainline issue where the chain is coming off the small ring in a way that causes it to resonate (ting ting ting). Flicking the ring seems to create same pitch sound.

For me, it's a non-issue as I just shift to the large ring and there's no noise there. The bike's up for sale in a few weeks, so was wondering how to explain this to a potential buyer.

thanks in advance

Chain wear or wear on the small chain ring can cause chain suck which upon release can cause a bit of chain slap. Check chain wear and if the small ring is toast or not.

The ting ting ting you're hearing is just your drivetrain telling you to stop crosschaining :) .

There's some flex (of the frame) when you pedal causing the chain to ping the FD, that wouldn't be evident when it's on the workstand?

I'm with usxorf - cross-chaining

Not an equipment problem, but an operator problem.

The noise you hear is probably the chain coming off the chainring to the side as it tries to align with the rear derailure

Recently had a worn front chainring, was also making a noise like was contacting the front derallieur especially under load, i dont crosschain when i ride. Couldnt work out where noise was eminating from as visually looked like there was clearance.

Dillon at Cycloworx put bike on workstand and showed me that the front chainring was warped, went from side to side when turning, big ring was fine.

Replaced small ring, prob solved.

He said often happens if you ride in small chainring most of the time.

This is what I was thinking too seeing as I recall it being there from new. i DO need to check the wear on the chainring, if any.

If it were chainsuck, I'm guessing that would be across all gears, not just a few.

The issues you have sound so similar to what I went through last month,

Another thing that occured to me recently was after i had replaced entire crank to a compact, new chain, new bb, i go for a ride, hear a ting ting clicking noise again, couldnt believe it, went on google to diagnose possible reasons, tightened pedals a bit, noise gone, when they put new crank, they prob didn't torque enough.
