Knee pain that just won't go away.

I had a very similar problem, although I had been riding for many years prior. Went to see a knee specialist who wanted to perform surgery to check what was going on and fix anything if necessary!?! Luckily I simply couldn't afford it and went for a 2nd opinion at the Sports Science Institute. They scanned it and sent me to the physio, who sorted it out chop chop.

In a nutshell, my quads are too stiff and I need to stretch them regularly. Much better option than surgery as an investigative tool.

As everyone suggested go see a few specialists and try to get the least invasive solution that works.

Hi all,

So I've been having ongoing knee pain for the last 1,5 years. Been riding for 3 years (I'm 25)

It's basically a patellar tracking problem. After a couple of minutes of even light riding, it gets sore and then I struggle to walk for a day or two.

I've tried numerous different options.

2 different bike fits.

3 different saddles.

2 different pedals and cleats.

Physios and strength training. (I've been told I have no cartilage damage or imbalances)

I've tried resting the leg for up to two weeks but as soon as I jump back on the bike the pain returns almost immediately. The only thing that helps is a Patellar strap that sits under my kneecap. It helps, but I still feel like I'm creating a bigger problem for myself down the line.

I'm basically getting to a point where I'm going to have to hang the bike up for a couple of months.

Have any of you guys had a similar problem and resolved the issue in some way I'm not thinking of?

Sounds like a muscle imbalance type problem to me....

Some questions:

How long have you been cycling for and have you always had this pain when cycling?

What cadence do you usualy cycle at, do u grind a heavy gear or spin? Grinding a heavy gear to much will highlight weak points in your knees.

Have u been checked properly for a leg length discrepancy? A small discrepancy of a few mm is normal, but a larger discrepancy (let’s say 10mm or more) might affect your knee, depending how your seat height is set up.

Good luck
