2018 challenges

Bit of a slow start to 2018...factory move is complete...havent even been for my first ride yet...been just lazying around thinking about life today.

tomorrow morning when i wake up things need to change...find new challenges for this year and get going.

The most important thing...i need to sort out the problem with my left knee...something which started last year while spending a lot of time on the indoor trainer...i made adjustment to the saddle..it seem to get a little better...but now i cant even sit still for too long and the pain becomes over whelming.

focus on eating the correct food and quantities...i know what i have to do...just put in more effort into preparation...eat smaller portion more often.

cut the sugar out my coffee completely.

get back on the indoor trainer and ease back into the cycling...then back on the bikes.

i need to start a stretching program or join a yoga group or something sooner than later...this is very important.

i plan to invest in a pair of road bike shoes and pedals (change over from the mtb pedal)  this year and maybe a new helmet.

i first need to get my mind in the right place to make anything happen...today is all about just brain dead lazying around allowing my body to recover from the over 400 long hours of physical site work.

i couldnt achieve 1 goal from last year...the 160 km ride...i am sure once i get back into the swing of things it will happen.

what is important...is i am not here to be faster or thinner than anyone...i just have to be a better me.

this thread is going to be all the about sharing the challenges i face as a 50 + year old wanting to get a little thinner...be able to ride a little further and little faster and climb hills a little easier...its all a mind game...get your mind right and everything else falls into place

feel free to join in and share your journey.

I've been saying that since the mid-2000's. Managed to get onto a single day, instructor's class at a Virgin Active, pretending to be a spinning instructor. I do the odd stretch here and there, but nothing that I should be doing.

I've found that there's only one solution to this:

- find an instructor you'll get out of bed for (mine is a dancer, and she is fit and hot :$)

- pay for the classes upfront (nothing gets you out of bed like having already spent the money)

works for me. backache/knee issues gone

Let the games begin...did my first indoor sweat box pedal this morning.

joined the 5000 mile challenge...8026 km to go :) this is going to be interesting.

Total for

2015 - 3569.6 km (just getting started)

2016 - 7108.0 km (my best year both cycling improvement and weight loss)

2017 - 4500 km (just plain lazy)

first official weigh in for the year 99.3 kg...ok i put on about a kg...not complaining considering the lack of commitment to the eating plan.

first thing i notice this morning on the idt was the movement in the left pedal...i need to check the crank arm or pedal is not bent on ol miss daisy...got off the bike after a short 20 km pedal and my knee wasnt feeling so great...i hope it is that simple...gona change bikes on the idt...just in case...cant have excuses ;)

Note to myself....get your mind right...

set the alarm...

pack out your kit...(dont forget your socks...you dont want to wake up the wife)

check your bike...tyre pressure etc...

make sure your batteries are charged...

and prepare your lunch for the following day....

if you get this right you have no excuses.

the level of commitment will determine the result...

going into 2018 i have learnt a lot about cycling...a saddle not a seat...forks not front forks and which socks to wear...etc etc  :)

but more important...about

group sets...

what 11-28...compact cranks etc...

how to pace myself...especially on long MTB rides like the 100 km hill2hill back to back...road rides over 120 km

my ftp...

cadence...

how much easier climbing hills gets as you get lighter.

what to take with on rides...

how much water to drink and when.

ol miss daisy has been put into retirement...after checking the cranks and pedals with a laser...both pedals are bent and the cranks dont line up...i have moved all the sensors onto the treksta which will now be used in the trainer.

What is it that i want out of cycling...i believe this is very important.

I started cycling because of a group of mates...they bought bikes and nagged me to join them...so i took an old scrap bike that was about to be dumped...drove to the grass patch on the beachfront and set off on my first ride...the pic on the left in the weight loss thread...at around 135 kg...straight off the couch.

I hear many comments...wow i see you have lost lots of weight...because of the cycling? ...i need to start cycling to loose weight...do it for the right reasons...

having fun with your mates...

enjoying the open space to clear your mind...

racing down a single track...

soaking up the beautiful surroundings...

smashing PR's...one of my favorites...just getting better than yesterday...

even those family rides on the beachfront...(my best rides)

just to mention a few.

the reason i say this...dont make the cycling about loosing weight otherwise it becomes a task and we all know how much we hate tasks...do it for all the other reasons the enjoyable ones...if you do loose weight cycling let it be another bonus  point.

If you want company while out riding join a club...i joined the east coast cycling club a couple of years ago...best thing i ever did...if you dont enjoy the company in one club join another one until you find the group you enjoy riding with...dont worry about if you can keep up...chase the group until you can keep up....add in a few km before or after the group ride and eventually you will keep up.

one thing to note...if you always only ride in the group you will only get as fast as that group...if you want to improve or get faster...chase the faster group and put in the extra effort.

new nickname...was given to me today on our ride.

first ride with the club in 2018...had a good one.

7928.42 km to go for 2018

gona have to start watching the weight again...as the kilometers  increase so the weight will start to increase...i have already started munching more and the fact that muscle is heavier than fat

Had some good fun today...just easing back into it.

Year end club meeting this morning...with a quick ride out to Umhlanga.

From riding right at the back of the D group when i joined the club...probably the heaviest riding in the club at the time...it has been such a pleasure to work my way through the groups with lots of chit chat and a little push here and there...motivation and advise from members correcting me along the way and sharing tips...now riding in the B group...hopefully after i loose another 5 kg or so and a couple hundred more km in the bank i will attempt to hold onto the back of the A group. (middle of the year)

that saying "it never gets easier...you just get faster" ...last year was a year of easy enjoyable rides...this year i will try pick up the pace again and make the effort to drop a few kg and get a little faster.

some advise i got a couple of years again...you cannot expect to turn your leg muscles into power houses in a couple months...it takes a few years to develop the muscles...that advise was 100 % correct in my case...being an old ballie...it has taken a few years (3 years) to get my legs to show signs of improvement...climbing hills for example is no longer a fear factor...it is now a matter of pacing at the right cadence and right gear.

the thought of having to climb a hill would actually put me off wanting to go ride...i took the advise...if you want to improve on hills...ride more hills...there is no hill in Durban that i havent attempted.

It took me a year to attempt the M19...December last year i did it 10 min faster than my last attempt.

I attempted Buttery on many occasions but failed...until i finally managed to ride all the way to the top.

Blamey rd in montclair...done.

not trying to boast...merely trying to point out that it takes time and effort to achieve certain goals...they dont just happen over night...just keep trying

"the percentage of effort determines the result"

as expected...101kg this morning...sad part is i only managed to clock up 163 km least week...i knew this was going to happen...just didnt think it would be so high.

went shopping...back to breakfast in the morning...dusted off the cooler box...packed lunch and veg for dinner.

Was a good day today.

Got my wheel back...with a brand new tyre.

Doc visit resulted in good news...knee problem just requires a few days of pill popping.... my blood pressure is back to normal...no more low blood pressure [emoji3] no need to add tons of salt to my food...he told me to add an electrolyte tablet to my water on long rides...now I have no excuses.

Took the Marshmallow for one of "those" hood spins...always the most fun rides...like the priest on the bike [emoji12]

I have a set of wheels complete with tyres...105 /11-28 cassette and rotors...I bought them to use as a spare set...I thought it would be a simple sleeve to fit my QR...however not so simple...the wheels have front and back thru axels holes...the reason I can't use them is the back is too wide for the anthem...the wheels are for a Scott or BMC mtb...ideal for road use.

Is someone wants to swop for a set of wheels for my anthem or send me a pm and make me an offer.

For me:

0-10km running challenge at week 8 (I started in mid-December) of 14 weeks. Coming from a zero (running) base, I’m happy with the progress. First ever road running race - on my 45th birthday. Looking forward to it, and doing a sub hour 10km.

32 days completed so far in the 365 challenge, where distance is irrelevant. The minimum is 20 minutes but I’m trying for at least 30-mins.

Weight is fortunately not a problem, but I still track it daily.

Life is good - problems and all.

Already the second month of 2018...talk about a slow start.

Gona try the no sugar in the coffee from today.

Got up at 5.30 and did a 6 km walk...after chatting to the doc about running...I think I am gona leave the running for skinny young people.

Gona chat to the broker about my helmet and shoes...I might get lucky...otherwise I am in for around R4000 to replace.

I have to give the shimano SHXC31L credit...they were the cheapest entry level shimano shoes I could find...I can't fault them on anything...good fit...durable...many days in the rain and mud...I now have the choice to upgrade...good chance I will get the same shoes.

Tour Durban coming up...my sister will be visiting from the UK...and she is bringing her bike with...best I get training...can't have her beating me up the M7...so I have my first challenge.
